The Crushed Velvet Apocalypse - 30th Anniversary Edition
Soleilmoon

***REISSUED!!! THE LEGENDARY PINK DOTS originally released The Crushed Velvet Apocalypse in 1990, sandwiched between the highly acclaimed albums The Golden Age and The Maria Dimension. Critics may differ, but fans generally consider this period to be the band's creative peak, an opinion that is backed up by solid and steady sales of the back catalog. The Crushed Velvet Apocalypse is an intoxicating blend of rock and psychedelia, seasoned with a touch whimsy, simultaneously engaging and memorable. Three decades on the music stands unblemished, timeless, enduring, and vital. This 30th Anniversary Edition of The Crushed Velvet Apocalypse includes the complete album as well as the tracks from the Princess Coldheart EP and two extended session recordings on a bonus LP. It is presented in a deluxe gatefold jacket, with a lyric insert and a color postcard with a download code. Limited edition of 250 copies on black vinyl, 250 on clear vinyl.

Jnana Records is proud to reissue the The Legendary Pink Dots’ Asylum, originally released as a double-LP in 1985. The CD comes in a gatefold card sleeve with an eight-page booklet featuring new liner notes by Edward Ka-Spel as well as the only two photos of the group’s first lineup. Asylum was remastered in 2014 by Ka-Spel and features a rare bonus track making its debut on CD.  “We recorded this in the tiny bedroom of violin player Patrick [Wright] who was the only Pink Dot to own an 8-track tape recorder and a ‘real’ mixing desk back in 1985. I’d moved to The Netherlands in December 1984 and it had all gone terribly wrong.... Ultimately I fled to a friend’s floor in Amsterdam on the train with a synthesizer under one arm and a bag of clothes over the other shoulder…. Graham Whitehead actually joined the Dots during the long-protracted sessions as he was the second decent keyboard player in a band that was now used to two ivory tinklers for some time, and he was also Patrick’s flatmate. “Steve Stapleton (Nurse with Wound) gave a little assistance with a couple of tracks as we waded through the mountain of recordings. Still mostly it was a time of people disappearing. Julie [Niblock Waller], who joined the Dots from Attrition, dropped out from the recordings quite early….  “Ultimately I completed the album with Patrick and Phil [Knight], and strangely the result turned out to be a small pearl...

***Coinciding with the LEGENDARY PINK DOTS’ 2011 European tour (which includes a night in Paris) comes this live DVD. The performance took place on November 13, 2009, in an intimate Parisian nightclub, with a lineup featuring EDWARD KA-SPEL, SILVERMAN, MARTIJN DE KLEER and NIELS VAN HOON. RAYMOND STEEG worked the soundboard. “Hearing that our 2009 Paris show was to be in small space called Le Klub, I admit being unable to stop a smile spreading across my face. During the soundcheck in another Paris club years earlier, a record label representative was experiencing problems over a guest list at the door. Filled with anger, he burst into the hall ranting and cursing in Parisian pidgeon English..... ‘THIS KLUB IS FUCKEEENG!’ Those words instantly entered Dots-mythology—an utterance used to let off steam in the face of frustration on the road (and always with a French accent). Legendary Pink Dots played a two-night residency at Le Klub, and the utterance was never needed. The first night was an intimate affair, while the second, which drew a weekend crowd, felt like a rock show in a shoebox. It was this second night that was filmed by JOHANNA BARDA and her camera team.”—Edward Ka-Spel (STREET DATE - 4/26/2011)

Live compilation of the three night residency from Paris 1994 with the full five member LEGENDARY PINK DOTS version. It started with a dusty box of DAT tapes. Perhaps it was years since anyone had listened to them despite the tantalizing labels,"Paris #1," "Paris #2," "Paris #3”... Indeed it was Paris where the Dots played their first residency in 1992. However , these tapes were a document of the Dots' one and only three-nighter from the 10th to the 12th of March 1994 at the delightful Theatre Passage du Nord Ouest. For this special occasion, HOURS of material were prepared and delivered in the certainty that quite possibly the same 300 or so people would turn up each night. Backing up that theory was the traditional shout of "champignons" from a mystery member of the audience on each of those nights. That clarion call actually began in Montreal a few years earlier, and we STILL hear it whenever we play in that city. It was ambitious. Sometimes the band was a little shaky but songs were played that were never heard again on a stage.” 4xLP version on 180-gram vinyl and cloth bound embossed box limited to 300 numbered copies.

***With the help of NURSE WITH WOUND mainman STEVEN STAPLETON on "tapes, piano, and inspiration," EDWARD KA-SPEL collaborated with multi-instrumentalist PATRICK WRIGHT on Chyekk China Doll, a worthy entry in Ka-Spel's lengthy, involved series of solo works. As with most of his solo work, the artist moves sideways from the collapsing, queasy anarchy of the LEGENDARY PINK DOTS for a quieter but no less freaky combination. Wright plays a core role throughout, co-writing nearly all the songs and adding his haunting, heavily echoed violin work to many songs, further rendering the playfully cartoon music-in-hell compositions even more curious. Includes two bonus tracks not found on the original LP release from 1984.

DsorDNE (pronounced Disordine) is a project from Torino, Italy that evolved as group out of the electronic experimental post punk project Novostj in 1987. At the core of DsorDNE is Marco Milanesio, musical engineer and co-founder of the HAX record label, joined by a revolving cast of musicians. Their spectrum ranged from experimental to structured electro-poetry and Soundtrack like instrumental electronic music. In 1987 they released their first track on a split-single with The Legendary Pink Dots. Between 1987 and 1994 they released 6 full length albums, 3 split-EPs and appeared on various cassette compilations.  È Un Sole (It’s a Sun) was the group’s only vinyl full length originally released in 1990 on HAX. It’s 8 tracks of electro-beat poetry and experimentation recorded between July 1989 and January 1990 by Marco Milanesio (music) and Roberta Ongaro (vocals) with guests Claudio Burdese (guitar), Danilo Beltrame (guitar) and Cristiana Bauducco (vocals). The album is broken up into two distinct halves. Side A contains four chunks of hard hitting, percussive patterns and rushing bass sequences. Dark, moody female vocals force their monologues through the machinery in their native Italian tongue. The traditional song structure is carefully avoided by giving lyrics equal opportunities be they recited, half-sung, whispered or spoken. Side B displays moodier moments, less savage attacks and subtler sensuality, veering towards the more melodic and existential. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The record is housed in an exact replica of the original jacket...

Dirty Songs Play Dirty Songs by Dirty Songs

Dirty Songs

Dirty Songs Play Dirty Songs
Audika

***Directed and produced by DAVID TOOP, Dirty Songs Play Dirty Songs reacts against our poisonous present, inspired anti-nostalgically by similarly reactive records and live performances from the 20th century: The Soft Machine and Pink Floyd 1967-68, The MC5’s Kick Out the Jams, The Stooges, Sun Ra’s Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy and The Heat Is On by The Isley Brothers. Dirty Songs Play Dirty Songs is the musical offshoot of a project conceived by artist MAXIME ROSSI, originating in (among other things) speculations on the (then unreleased) legendary Pink Floyd “John Latham” recordings (1967) and FBI investigations (1964) into subversive and obscene messages supposedly buried within the recorded lyrics of The Kingsmen’s “Louie Louie.” Developed through conversations between Maxime Rossi and David Toop and through support from Fondation Fiminco & MRAC, these ideas metamorphosed into the band and recordings known as DIRTY SONGS, existing both as audio recordings and audio-visual elements of Maxime Rossi’s installation Christmas On Earth Continued, exhibited at MRAC in November 2017. Dirty Songs is David Toop (bass, guitar, digital electronics, VCS3 synth), PHIL MINTON (voices), EVAN PARKER (soprano and tenor saxophones), STEVE BERESFORD (Farfisa organ, VCS3 synth), and MARK SANDERS (drums). 16 track vinyl LP 17 track CD. The legendary Kid Congo Powers returns to the psychedelic jungle with a stripped-down, no-frills set of volcanic songs. The premier voodoo guitarist for seminal sexy, swampy bands like Gun Club, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and The Cramps, Powers is a restless aesthete whose earlier solo efforts explored and mixed genres. With Dracula Boots, he comes back to his roots as a crackerjack guitarist playing the primitive music that inspired him--the raw sounds of garage and early Chicano rock.  It only makes sense to record such glittering gems as Thee Midniters' "I Found a Peanut" and Bo Diddley's "Funky Fly" in a high school gymnasium. The sessions took place in a Midwest town called Harveyville with his nefarious Pink Monkey Birds. Bassist Kiki Solis from El Paso,TX and drummer Ron Miller from Macon, GA provide the Southern soul sauce needed to fuel the engine of the rhythm train. Recording on a stage with an old PA system created a natural reverb, summoning the magic of a bygone prom interrupted by a juvenile delinquent rumble.  The original songs on Dracula Boots go from loud, fuzzy biker rock ("Hitchhiking") to a greasy rump-shaker groove ("Bobo Boogie"); from a scary movie soundtrack ("La Llarona") to The Meters having an acid flashback ("Black Santa").  So sink your teeth into this hunk of wax and waste no time strapping on your Dracula Boots. You will dance your way from the cradle to the grave, and beyond.

Named after San Francisco Chronicle’s pink-hued arts and entertainment guide, Pink Section coalesced at SF Art Institute and performed their first show at the legendary Deaf Club on Valentine’s Day, 1979. These self-taught musicians existed on the fringe (even in the local underground scene), producing an unusual brand of off-kilter post-punk against a backdrop of Dadaist aesthetics. The group itself was strangely symmetrical: singer Judy Gittelsohn and drummer Carol Detweiler (both members of Inflatable Boy Clams), singer / guitarist Matt Heckert (Survival Research Laboratories) and bassist Stephen Wymore. While the hallucinatory layers of male / female vocals on “Shopping” conjure images of deranged domesticity and ’50s Americana gone haywire, the fractured riffs of “Midsummer New York” deconstruct Yoko Ono’s original even further, stripping bare Pink Section’s fondness for angular rhythms and out-of-control oscillations. This first-time retrospective LP collects the band’s rare 1979 single, the self-titled EP, unreleased demos and live material. Recommended for fans of Suburban Lawns, Units, and DEVO.

Gun Club co-founder. Gunslinger for The Cramps. Six-string stylist for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The legendary Kid Congo Powers named his new album Gorilla Rose after the artist / performer. As a teenage boy, Powers met Gorilla Rose in the emerging LA punk scene of the ’70s through seminal weirdo band The Screamers. He recalls, “Gorilla was a close and constant presence and influence on The Screamers and me as a young pup. He was to The Screamers like Bobby Neuwirth was to Dylan—a jester of sorts, sparking many of their great lyric ideas. I still think Gorilla Rose is the most fabulous nom de plume in history. His unsung specter was in my mind a lot last year so I decided to title the album Gorilla Rose to honor his name and bring him into rock ’n’ roll’s ongoing conversation.” While editing his fan club newsletters at a haunted Hollywood house, a teenage Powers was also exposed to the sounds of Neu, Nico, Billie Holiday and Goblin’s soundtrack to the film Susperia, and along with Gorilla Rose, these past influences found their way into the Kid’s new full-length. To record the album, Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds grabbed producer Jason Ward and hightailed it back to the magik gymnasium at The Harveyville Project, a high school in Kansas and also the scene of the crime of their much acclaimed 2009 release Dracula Boots. Kiki “El Coyote” Solis on bass and Ron “The Cap’n” Miller on...

Waking from a nap in the swamps of outer space, Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds ride a geisterbahn into the hypnagogic, a place between sleep and consciousness also known as the “Haunted Head.” Haunted Head is the third LP the quartet has oozed out for In The Red. Legendary guitar stylist Kid Congo Powers (The Gun Club, The Cramps, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds) and longtime cohorts bassist Kiki Solis (Knife in the Water), drummer Ron Miller (Up The Academy) and guitarist Jesse Roberts (Sandrider, The Ruby Doe) take matters into their own mitts by having Roberts engineer and Miller mix the record at the now well-known Harveyville Project High School in Kansas.  With The Pink Monkey Birds’ cocktail of fuzz guitars, New Orleans drum beats, soulful strut bass lines and sonic ambrosia at its most potent, Haunted Head offers the purest distillation of the group’s powers. The trip of your dreams includes the “cheap and tawdry” in a tribute to dearly departed actress Susan Tyrell (“Su Su”), the morphing of Jerry Lee Lewis with Phyllis Diller (“Killer Diller”) and the plain ol’ insanity of romantic love (“Dance Me Swamply”). The band also tells you how they like “the mondos and the cholos and the weirdos and he freaks” on the rollicking “Let’s Go!” and how they don’t like “neocons in square back suits” and “throwing up in a dirty phone booth “ on the punky proclamation “I Don’t Like.” I mean, who does?  On...

The Dark Side Of The Wall by The Stallion

The Stallion

The Dark Side Of The Wall
In The Red

All hail the debut release from The Stallion! The Stallion is Ben Wallers and Alastair Mackinven of the Country Teasers. For two years they labored at the legendary Hit Factory recording studios in London as their schedule allowed. The project at hand was their long-planned / often-threatened The Dark Side Of The Wall—a song for song interpretation of Pink Floyd’s 1979 album The Wall. At long last In The Red is proud to unveil the results. It should surprise no one familiar with Ben Wallers’s work or record collection that he would choose this particular album to honor. The Wall’s influence has been noticeable in his music before (see “Spiderman In The Flesh” from the Country Teasers’ Empire Strikes Back album). The man likes his Floyd—he even rates The Final Cut as “brilliant”. It should also surprise no one that Roger Waters’s compositions from The Wall take a morbid and twisted turn in the hands of Wallers and Mackinven. What was already a fairly dark and bleak piece of work becomes much darker and bleaker here. It’s also longer. Pink Floyd’s original contained 26 songs spread across four sides of long playing vinyl which, by comparison, was the same number of tracks as Pink Floyd’s four previous studio albums combined. The Stallion’s take on these same 26 selections spans six sides of vinyl. Mackinven says, “it’s longer so it’s better, right?” This is a beautiful piece of work both aurally and aesthetically. Packaged in a gorgeous heavy duty double gatefold,...

***The first release (1969) from the home studio of future BBC Radiophonic Workshop composer PETER HOWELL (he wrote the second version of the Doctor Who theme tune for BBC-TV) and his musical partner JOHN FERDINANDO, makers of legendary albums under the names ITHICA, AGINCOURT, FRIENDS and TOMORROW COME SOMEDAY. This private press record was recorded as a musical backdrop for a stage version of Alice through the Looking Glass by local amateur dramatics group the Ditchling Players. The musical templates are inspired, Lewis Carroll's surreal poetry is as attractive as ever, and the project is colored by other English psychedelic acts of the era such as the Pink Floyd: indeed, it has been compared elsewhere to a pastoral equivalent of Piper At The Gates of Dawn. There are numerous highlights scattered throughout the album, but pride of place must go to ‘Jabberwocky,’ an impressive mélange of treated vocals and backward tapes that is worth the price of admission alone. With its drowsy atmosphere, myriad sound effects and languid organ-based sound, “Alice” certainly invokes the spirit of the psychedelic age, albeit from the perspective of photogenic Middle England rather than hallucinogenic Middle Earth. Rarely can an album or book have ended with a more apposite line: “Life—what is it but a dream?" We are pleased as punch to be able to present the compact disc debut of “Alice”—and with extra material, too!

***Dominique Blanc-Francard’s Ailleurs is trippy and weird... and yet… the songs are catchy and the album rocks out. Fuzzy guitar, chunky drums, weird effects, a thick mix of layers of sound—all tasty ingredients. Pink Floyd meets T-Rex? It’s a terrific recipe, which surely must describe other albums? Even so, we can’t think of another album that sounds quite like Ailleurs. Without realizing it, you've probably already listened to Dominique Blanc-Francard's work—as a sound engineer. DBF worked from 1970 to 1973 at the mythical Chateau d’Hérouville studio under the leadership of Michel Magne, the legendary composer of soundtracks such as Les Tontons Flingueurs, Fantômas, and Angélique. The studio was the famous “Honky Château’’ of Elton John, a place where Dominique Blanc-Francard participated in recordings by Pink Floyd, David Bowie, T. Rex, Elton John, and Cat Stevens Pink Floyd. You can also find DBF’s involvement on records by Magma, Cœur Magique, Gong, Catharsis, Ergo Sum, Zoo, Markusfeld, Axis and the compilation Puissance 13+2 (Power 13 + 2).

***The debut EP of Japan’s most visionary new death-doom band of the last five years at least. Tokyo-based Japanese death-doom destroyers Mortal Incarnation debut with Lunar Radiant Dawn, a two-track, sixteen-minute dirge of colossal and otherworldly atmospheric death metal that towers over this year's death-doom output as one of the most imposing and spellbinding manifestations the genre has seen all year. On the mesmerizing EP the Japanese four piece have masterfully harnessed the majesty and alien experimentalism first conceptualized by legendary death-doom progenitors dISEMBOWELMENT, and fused it with the merciless darkness of bands like Morbid Angel, Immolation and Incantation, to sublimate into an imposing sonic entity of unseen majesty and enormity. Unyieldingly heavy and dark, yet profoundly mystical and contemplative, through the sapient interviewing of baneful and crepuscular 90s death metal and massive architectures of lysergic psychedelic virtuosity borrowed directly from the likes of Pink Floyd and King Crimson, Mortal Incarnation have assembled one of the most modern and visionary pure death-doom releases in years, in which the intimacy and meditative powers of the golden era of 70's psych/progressive rock and the primordial darkness and ferocity of the most suffocating death metal coexist in a marvel of superb aesthetic dominance and of crushing evocative force.

Scientists

Not For Sale: Live '78/'79
Grown Up Wrong

***BACK IN STOCK!!! The Scientists’ pre-Swampland days in Perth are brilliantly encapsulated on this collection of mostly unreleased live material from ’78 and ‘79. These were the days when former Victims and future Hoodoo Gurus drummer James Baker led the band alongside guitarist/singer Kim Salmon, and when their poster read “Rock ‘n’ Roll in the tradition of The Groovies and The Heartbreakers”. The Perth-based line-up recorded the brilliant “Frantic Romantic” single and self-titled EP highlighted by “Last Night.” They also recorded a posthumously released LP—the “pink album”—which came as a massive disappointment due to bad production and a reduced line-up. Not For Sale: Live’ 78/79 is a collection of live and rehearsal tracks that captures the band making the same noises as on those 45s, and presents live versions of the fan faves and vastly superior versions of most of the LP tracks as well as coughing up a bunch of hitherto unreleased originals and covers to boot. This is “The Legendary Scientists”—as they were dubbing themselves within months of forming—as they should be heard. The main set comes from late 1979: a live-to-air broadcast from Melbourne’s 3RRR. The same line-up is also present on a handful of primitive live recordings, made by a friend at one of the group’s regular haunts, the Governor Broome Hotel in ‘79. Play this really loud and it sounds like right there in the pub, shitty PA and all. Packaged with rare and unseen images, an original 1979 Roadrunner magazine feature by Kim Williams...

***Electric Telepathy Vol. 2 is the latest installment from legendary multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter (tenor sax, soprano sax, trumpet, flute) together with Patrick Holmes (clarinet), Matthew Putman (keyboard), Hilliard Greene (bass) & Federico Ughi (drums), also known as the Telepathic Band. This new LP follows their previous albums Telepathic Alliances, Telepatia Liquida, and Electric Telepathy, Vol. 1, and Telepathic Mysteries, Vol. 1, further exploring in-the-moment themes and landscapes. On Electric Telepathy the band used material from a recording session in which they improvised, then went to recreate the album in the studio’s cutting-room floor. The Vinyl District calls “a glorious experience” and the Brooklyn Rail says it’s “a blissfully ecstatic sprawl of spiritual-jazz explorations of the most transcendent order.” A masterpiece of improvisation, the album is reminiscent of Ornette Coleman Prime Time, Pink Floyd and Sun Ra, overlaying lush wind instrumentation on textural percussion and electronic currents.

***BACK IN STOCK!!! In the late ’70s, The Avengers established themselves as one of the US’s preeminent punk bands. Fusing incisive guitar hooks, explosive rhythms and adolescent venom, the group forged some of the most in-your-face songs of the era. Their live shows were legendary, playing up and down the West Coast and even blowing Sex Pistols off the stage at the latter’s final performance. As Byron Coley writes in the liner notes, “Of the best bands of San Francisco’s first wave in 1977, The Avengers were by far the coolest and youngest sounding. They roared without irony, as though this were indeed Year Zero (and, for a moment, it was), with history being overwritten by the new. The honesty of their belief was carried by their sound. And it was convincing!” Originally released in 1983, four years after the band’s dissolution, The Avengers’ self-titled LP is often referred to as “The Pink Album” for its magenta-hued cover design. Frontwoman Penelope Houston’s iconic voice and razor-sharp lyrics resonate on anthems “We Are The One” and “The American In Me,” while penetrating ballads like “Corpus Christi” reveal a truly out-of-body euphony. The Pink Album remains The Avengers’ definitive statement—collecting their classic Dangerhouse EP, sessions recorded with the Pistols’ Steve Jones and a half-dozen revelatory demos. While much has been written about The Avengers in the past three decades, rock critic Greil Marcus puts it succinctly, “The word I always come back to is mystical, and that remains almost theirs alone.”

***ANDREW LILES’ Wanton Wives... follows on from where his Maleficent Monster left off in June and also follows on from his recent Equestrian Vortex soundtrack 10" on Death Waltz. This, the second LP of horror inspired nastiness in his series for Blackest Rainbow, features creeping giallo jazz with sultry spoken vocals, synth heavy monsters, cannibal lunacy, and a track called 'Wild Boar', wait until you hear that one. This is the sound of someone who has spent too many late nights watching any horror films they can get their hands on. Legendary UK artist GRAHAM HuMPHREYS returns to create new art, this time featuring Liles bursting from his poor wives chest whilst she grasps a skull and a decapitated head of a voodoo priestess version of herself. McCoy helped introduce punk to Finland with his teenaged band BRIARD before befriending glamorous MICHAEL MONROE and forming Hanoi Rocks. Distant Galaxies Collide by Urwelt

Urwelt

Distant Galaxies Collide
Sleeping Giant Glossolalia

***Urwelt is the newest project of UK musicians Anthony Di Franco and Kevin Laska. Di Franco is a member of legendary psych-noise squad Ramleh, founded in the early '80s amidst the UK's early industrial and power electronics scene; he is also a solo artist with releases under the names AX and JFK. (Of JFK's brand new 2021 album, Avalanche Zone, NYC band Uniform tweeted: "An early contender for record of the year... A heavy electronics masterpiece by one of the genre’s most enduring artists."). Laska is known to many as Godflesh's principal live sound engineer. He makes music via his own project, Transitional, with albums released on Justin Broadrick's Avalanche Recordings label, and teamed up on a split with Broadrick's JK Flesh project in 2019. He has been a member of the relaunched Ramleh. Di Franco and Laska first teamed up in the late '90s; their collab, Novatron, melded noise and drone and yielded one album, New Rising Sun, in 2000. Two decades later, the two are at it again: new project Urwelt picks up where Novatron left off and ups the intensity by powers of ten. On debut album Distant Galaxies Collide, opener "Pure Celestial Eyes" sets the tone: demonic distortion, hypnotic loops, and a slowly intensifying synth-swell combine to create a vivid experience that absolutely dominates the listener for the track's entire 14-minute running time. Urwelt's combination of squelching noise and rapturous drone could be likened to a mix of Tangerine Dream and Sunn 0))). The tones underlying...

Running Away With Yourself by Cox, Peter J

Running Away With Yourself
Dosh

"It's safe to say that original copies of Peter J. Cox's 'Running Away With Yourself’ LP are scarcer than a kipper with legs. Brinley Farthing, lead archivist with Blaggards Mystic Emporium, reckons it was pressed in a DIY vanity run of 100, with artwork hand-mounted by Cox himself, in the year 1979. In this business, an accurate backstory is everything. And be that as it may, the pickled punters at Dosh as proud to present this cracking reissue in the 3rd decade of the 21st century.  For those unfamiliar, 'Running Away With Yourself' sounds like the results of a Pink Fairies (or Groundhogs) fan who ran face-first into a brick. A one-man wrecking crew, quaffing & cursing the sacred nectar of Rock, one scrumpy pint at a time. You can practically hear the sulfate sizzling on his tongue as this masterpiece shreds your ears. Or as we're fond of saying here, 'bloody-minded wins again'. Pressed in an edition of 250, this blazing solo opus not only keeps good company with the aforementioned influencers but also stands tall alongside compadres such as Ron Warren Ganderton/Sound Ceremony, Afflicted Man, John The Postman & Legendary Stardust Cowboy. If you think you've heard it all, you haven't. But with this, you’’re one step closer."—Seabert Liversausage, for Dosh

When The Sun Goes Down, It Goes Down Forever
Sentient Ruin Laboratories

***American epic gothic rock/post-punks Murderbait issue their haunting sophomore EP "When the Sun Goes Down, it Goes Down Forever" for the first time ever on vinyl via Sentient Ruin. Initially self-released on cassette tape and digitally by the band itself in 2019, with its majestic songwriting and heart-splitting dramaticism the mesmerizing two-track short player establishes the Portland, Oregon-based atmospheric gothic rockers as a cornerstone example of epic and dark western gothic excellence and as a beacon of superb and dramatic storytelling lost in a night of endless gloom and unravelling romanticism. Through its two epic spells of haunting psychedelic goth majesty, "When the Sun Goes Down, it Goes Down Forever" unfolds nearly twenty minutes of dark western lore and dusty somber storytelling soaked in gloom and shadows, uncovering dark recollections of personal turmoil and decay, inner downfall, purgatory, redemption and rebirth through the trial of struggle and penitence. The two tracks display an unrivaled and unseen evocative power, channeled by a dramatic and operatic vocal delivery as centerpiece to a cinematic construct of epic progressive buildups and dark psychedelic dirges woven with keyboards, organs, electric guitars, synths and a monumental pulsing rhythm section. With influences sourced from a diverse pletora of legendary acts like Nick Cave (a song of which inspired the band's name), Swans, Fields of the Nephilim, Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, The Cure (especially “Pornography” and “Disintegration” era), Earth, Dead Can Dance, Bauhaus, Tangerine Dream, and John Carpenter, Murderbait's masterful fusion of epic prog, majestic gothic/deathrock, post-punk, darkwave, space...

***Lena Platonos is a Greek musician, pianist and music composer. One of the pioneers of Greek electronic music, she remains active today. Lena was born in Heraklion, Crete, and grew up in Athens. She began learning how to play the piano at the age of two and became a professional pianist before turning eighteen. Soon afterwards, she received a scholarship to study in the the Berlin and Vienna Academies , where she was exposed to jazz, rock and Middle Eastern music. She returned to Greece in the late 70’s and began working with the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation.  Released in 1984, ‘Μάσκες Ηλίου’ (‘Sun Masks’) was Lena Platonos’ first record to feature her own words and vocals. All instruments were performed by Lena herself.. ‘Sun Masks’ was inspired by Argentine writer, Julio Cortázar as well as the film ‘The Wall’ by Pink Floyd. "I began to reverse my thought process, to let melodies fade out, to turn to minimalism, to experiment on my Yamaha C60 synthesizer and a variety of “boxes” which I used to change the sound of my voice as well as the sound of the synthesizer” says Lena. The album featured experiments with different sounds and a new batch of electronic equipment, such as the legendary Roland TR 808 drum machine. Lena narrates each song in deadpan fashion, skillfully reciting her surreal Greek poetry. Her lyrics deal with the futility of love, the gap of human relationships, consumerist alienation in the bourgeois lifestyle of the 1980s.

***BACK IN STOCK!!!  Received a 7.3 rating from Pitchfork.  It’s been nearly four years since the last Mammoth Grinder full-length, Extinction of Humanity, was released via Relapse Records (CD) and Cyclopean Records (vinyl). That album showcased the band’s direction into a distinctly death metal permutation, full of aggression and punk rawness, and they continued in this spirit on 2011’s split LP with fellow Austin, Texas-based group Hatred Surge. Now, after a long wait and much anticipation, Mammoth Grinder has found a home on 20 Buck Spin for the release of their wildly destructive third full-length Underworlds. The album marks a peak at which Mammoth Grinder have sharpened and perfected their sound into a seething grind / death / thrash maelstrom of intense degree. Unrelenting in concentrated raw precision and focused power, Underworlds careens violently through ten tracks with effortless versatility and the fixated songcraft expected of a band on their third record. Tracks like “Wraparound Eyes” with its Unleashed-style midsection, or the short sharp shock of “Paragon Pusher,” illustrate Mammoth Grinder’s mastery over multiple variations of metal to assemble their own sound. Underworlds is adorned with artwork by the legendary Joe Petagno, whose work has graced albums from artists like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin to Motörhead and Marduk. Mammoth Grinder is a live act and that is where the songs on Underworlds will expose their most virulent strain—the band has plans to tour extensively upon the album’s release, including an appearance at this year’s Power of...

From Sacramento via outer space comes The Twinkeyz and their Alpha Jerk LP, restored to excellence after 40 years! During the sizzling hot summer of 1976, Donnie Jupiter, Tom Darling and Walter Smith decided to break out of their boredom with a band. The group was named after Pink Fairies drummer Twink, and influnced by the Fairies, Velvet Underground, Thirteenth Floor Elevators and other underground favorites. In 1977, The Twinkeyz recorded and self-released their classic first single, “Aliens in Our Midst.” 1978 saw its followup, “E.S.P. / Cartoon Land.” And in 1979, the album Alpha Jerk was released on the Dutch label Plurex, run by Wally Van Middendorp of the Minny Pops. Though the songs on Alpha Jerk were great, the final mix was botched and the mastering job flawed. What should have been a classic stiffed as one of rock ’n’ roll’s “could have been great.” Now it is! In 1994, Anopheles Records’ Karl Ikola decided to do The Twinkeyz right. Ikola got ahold of the master tapes and, with Jupiter and Greg Freeman, remixed the entire album. In 1997, he released the restored Alpha Jerk, along with abandoned single tracks, live songs and other tidbits, as a CD entitled Aliens in Our Midst. The collection and its vinyl companion Cartoon Land went out of print more than fifteen years ago. Now after four decades, S-S Records presents Alpha Jerk as it was intended, with the original cover art and the superior Ikola / Jupiter mix. This version has...

***Jackpot is honored to be releasing these four mighty reissues from Booker T. & The MG's during their hot streak from 1965-1968. Likely, the most well known, respected, and beloved instrumental band of all time, their recorded output has also become one of the most cherished ever put to tape. (AAA) all analogue process sourced from the original master tapes.  Cut by Kevin Gray.   Initially serving as the house band for Stax Records, organist Booker T. Jones, guitarist Steve Cropper, bassist Lewie Steinberg (later replaced by bass monster Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn), and drummer Al Jackson Jr. were instrumental in creating the “Memphis Sound.’   They recorded the basic tracks for well over a hundred records, including backing some of the greatest artists of all time: Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Rufus Thomas, and Albert King, all the while breaking barriers as one of the South’s first integrated acts.  But they became legendary powerhouses of their own making when they started recording for themselves. Throughout their history, they racked up Top 40 hits, had their songs covered by artists as diverse as The Ventures, Count Basie, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award, and continued being the band of choice in collaborations with legends such as Bob Dylan & Neil Young. 1967’s Hip Hug-Her is one of their most beloved records, with its toe tapping into the pop world. The incendiary proto hard rock and ambitious epic journeys this album delivers are all the more uncanny and devastating when you realize Gary Del Vecchio was a mere 16 years old when the title track Buzzin was unleashed! Even more astonishing is how far he travelled over the next five years, documented in this brilliant selection of nine tracks from the classic daze of early 1970s underground rock. Ohio was a hotbed for hard rock at the time with bands like the James Gang, Glass Harp, Poobah, Left End, Damnation Of Adam Blessing… what you get here matches the style any of those bands laid down. Gary's music grabs you immediately and grows over time. Grabber and Grower… best of both worlds style! It makes sense that Gary later owned a recording studio, right out of the gate he was laser focussed on all the aspects involved in making music that stands the test of time. The guitar action is incredible, shards of sound flying free yet hitting the bullseye continuously, vocals confident with none of the macho posturing that ages poorly in much early hard rock. These tracks are all vividly recorded and meticulously mixed in a way that balances fiery performance and intelligent structure to maximum effect. The bass and drumming here are phenomenally inventive and propulsive, the several players involved across the album nail it in their support of Gary's vision. This is rock music born in the 'anything is possible' life affirming energy of the...

Legendary Hearts ooze an elusive chemistry. The collusion of Andrew Cowie’s disembodied synth sensibility and Kieran Hegarty’s fluorescent liquid guitar lines result in strange medicated states not easily grasped on first pass. Their previous (and only other) recording, 2012’s Songs From The Elevator, plays a little like the softest soft-rock sieved through a porridge of melted pills: chemical, blank, alluring, indistinct. The duo’s latest psychoactive sculpture garden, Aerial View, takes inspiration from a similarly liminal, haunted zone of transience – vacant, nocturnal hubs of travel – but pushes the project into richer, more irradiated moods. “Vanishing Point” and “Acceleration” spill and slide through blurred, lofty passages of legendary soloing and glassy synth exploration, coming in and out of view like hazy Tantric waves of tonal emotion. The more condensed pieces – “Terminal A,” “Terminal B,” “Stopover (Snapshot)” – connect the dots between, half-choreographed mood swings of starved beats, wealthy fog, and sunset guitar heroics. Haunted dreams of carpeted horizons, illuminated nothingness, on the way from some place to nowhere. Lift off, look down, let go. Mastered by Lawrence English at 158; artwork and design by Suzanne Pfutzenreuter.

Join those Legendary Shack Shakers as they mark their 25th anniversary as a band on Planet Earth—to celebrate the occasion, they’ve invited former members to help them record an all country & western album! From spaghetti western to bluegrass, western swing to rockabilly, Tex-Mex to country folk, the variety of the genre is on full display. Always ones to respect their history, the Shack Shakers have also included some Kentucky local legends to “pick and grin”. Hotshots such as Stanley Walker (Grand Ole Opry band leader for Jean Shepard and guitarist for Sun Studio’s “Rockin’ ” Ray Smith) and Jack Martin (dobro-player for Lester Flatt) really give those “young ‘uns” a run for their money. And the always-ornery “Hillbilly” Bob Prather (Louisiana Hayride fiddler and running buddy of Opry star Onie Wheeler) pitches in too. Just add The Dead Kennedys’ Jello Biafra, hillbilly royalty Chris Scruggs and an Old Crow Medicine Showman and you’ve got a recipe for what could only be a Legendary Shack Shakers masterpiece. Titling it Cockadoodledeux was done, admittedly, to bookend 2002’s Cockadoodle-Don’t, an album by which many fans were first made aware of the group. However, it also serves to signal the start of another twenty-five years! Just as the plucky, two-headed chick emerges from the egg on the cover, so too begins a fresh start for the band’s creative energies. Once again, generations of fans—both young and old—get to lean in, listen and expect the un-expected.

Music From The Elevator by Legendary Hearts

Legendary Hearts

Music From The Elevator
Not Not Fun

Miasmic Melbourne new age prog duo Legendary Hearts (aka Andrew Cowie + Kieran Hegarty) first entered the public eye/ear in 2012 but their music has only grown more opaque with age. Music From The Elevator is their 2012 debut, originally released via the Dungeon Taxis label, and captures their chemistry in altered states of sprawl, symbiosis, and swoon. Six expressionistic oozes of infinity gauntlet guitar, slow-motion drum machines, and warping synth, filtering in and out of focus like glares against glass, unfeeling neon aglow in smoke and smog. Each piece reflects (and is named for) the next higher level of the structure, from the low-lidded fusion lurch of “Basement” up to breezy cosmosis chillouts “Rooftop” and “Fire Exit.” Long-form, liquid, nebulous, and narcotic – Legendary Hearts walk a wavelength all their own, on their own. Remastered by Lawrence English in Brisbane, Australia. J-cards designed by Britt Brown.

The infamous, explosive Southern wrecking crew The Legendary Shack Shakers are back with a brand new full-length titled The Southern Surreal. Their first release in five years, the album lands on the band’s 20th anniversary and is their Alternative Tentacles debut. In conjunction with its release, the band will tour across much of the United States and Europe this Fall. The Legendary Shack Shakers’ incendiary interpretations of the blues, punk, rock and country are all-at-once irreverent, revisionist, dangerous and fun. Built upon a haunting, Southern Gothic theme, The Southern Surreal is a fifteen-track set featuring regular band members Colonel JD Wilkes (vocals, harmonica, banjo), Rod Hamdallah (electric guitar), Mark Robertson (electric and upright bass) and Brett Whitacre (drums), with guest appearances by actor / musician and longtime Shack Shakers fan Billy Bob Thornton, and Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison. Although not legendary upon being named, the Shack Shakers have grown into their reputation due to their six critically acclaimed studio albums, often heavy touring schedule and songs that have been featured on television shows such as HBO’s True Blood. Past tour mates and fans include Reverend Horton Heat, Rancid, The Black Keys, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club and Hank Williams III. Robert Plant is also a noted Legendary Shack Shakers fan, and picked the band to open for him on his 2005 tour of Europe. Catch the band live throughout North America and Europe between September 2015 and February 2016!

***Kalamazoo’s LEGENDARY WINGS are back with the second LP for Dirtnap Do You See improves upon the template set by their first album (Making Paper Roses, Fall 2012), alternating bursts of caffeinated punk-pop with mid-tempo jangly numbers, all served up raw and catchy as hell. Think fun, high energy music, but with enough melancholy in the lyrics to keep this far from the realm of vapid party jams. While this isn’t too far removed musically from some of the more well-known bands on Dirtnap (think Denton, TX) there is an unmistakable quality to Legendary Wings that makes them instantly and unmistakably identifiable as hailing from the Midwest.

Making Paper Roses by Legendary Wings

Legendary Wings

Making Paper Roses
Dirtnap

***“It happens very rarely (like a couple of times over the course of 120 releases) that we here at Dirtnap get a random CDR demo in the mail, pop it in, listen to it a couple of times, and then slap our fist down on the counter and say ‘fuck it, we'll put that out!’ And that's just what happened in the case of Kalamzoo, MI's LEGENDARY WINGS. Unsolicited demos are largely a lousy way to round up new bands for the label, but once in a blue moon you get one that's just THAT good. Musically, the apple that is Legendary Wings doesn't fall TOO far from the tree that is Dirtnap Records, (think caffeiniated, raw, fast pop), but they are also unmistakably, instantly identifiable as originating from the Midwest. Potential Johns meets Gaunt? Scared Of Chaka if they were from Minneapolis? Denton with jangle? Their mix of caffeinated instrumentation, and overly sensitive lyrics will make you melt if the mood is right.”

Legendary Peg Leg Howell by Howell, Peg Leg

Howell, Peg Leg

Legendary Peg Leg Howell
Sutro Park

***PEG LEG HOWELL was a forgotten, impoverished blues artist when musicologist George Mitchell recorded him at age 75 in 1963. It is these recordings that make up The Legendary Peg Leg Howell record originally on Testament. But Peg Leg was actually part of the original wave of blues recording artists, recording for Columbia in 1926. His story is like many: when success proved illusive, he turned his back on music and settled for bootlegging and other types of work until rediscovered in the ‘60s. By then, he was old and fragile—qualities that translate beautifully on this quiet, haunting record that would be the bookend to a recording output that was tragically small but truly rich. The Legendary Peg Leg Howell is a sonic novel, filled with storytelling, drama, history and sadness. Hope and compassion. It is a classic. Reissue includes amazing front cover woodcut of Peg Leg.

Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes by Tutti, Cosey Fanni

Tutti, Cosey Fanni

Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes
Conspiracy International

***COSEY FANNI TUTTI's original soundtrack recordings for Caroline Catz's acclaimed film about Delia Derbyshire. In 2018, Cosey Fanni Tutti was commissioned to write the soundtrack to director and actor Caroline Catz's acclaimed, intimate portrayal of the composer, musician, and sonic experimentalist, Delia Derbyshire (1937-2001). Best known for her groundbreaking work on the 1963 Doctor Who theme tune, Derbyshire was instrumental in giving easy access to and rewiring a nation's attitudes towards electronic music. Working within the often-stifling confines of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, her experimentalism—which saw her manipulating magnetic tape, found sounds and electronics—is only now being given full credit for the immeasurable impact it has had on the way we hear the world. The new album includes the audio explorations and experiments that lead Cosey Fanni Tutti to the final soundtrack for Catz's film. From the four-minute long "Cornet Lament" to the humorous "Snuff Chorus" (which references an addiction that Derbyshire had for snuff), the album is a journey through both Delia and Cosey's practice—Fanni Tutti spent time researching Derbyshire's archives (both musical and the more personal ephemera of her life) to create an audio world for Catz's depiction of the artist to inhabit. Fanni Tutti explains, "The compositions are inspired by my research of the Delia Derbyshire audio archive, Delia's original compositional notes and techniques which in combination with my admiration and love of Delia's work provided a way to integrate her style and approach to music with my own. An alliance of our sensibilities." The new album...

***Legendary and rare folk-psych private press record from 1967 that holds up well. Furthermore, the LP is legendary in a literal sense: until recently, few collectors really even knew it truly existed. And Roger Salloom? imagine Jack Kerouac, John Belushi, Lord Buckley, and Lenny Bruce, then throw in Leadbelly, Jimmy Reed, Lonnie Johnson, and Geoff Muldaur… all rolled into one person, and you have a glimpse of poet, singer-songwriter Roger Salloom. Salloom was in the center of the 1960s San Francisco psychedelic scene, playing the Fillmore with Santana, Van Morrison, BB King and Procul Harum. In the 1970s he moved to Nashville to pursue songwriting, then disappeared for two decades to raise a family as a single parent and draw a syndicated cartoon. There is a story here. A story so intriguing that it enticed an award-winning filmmaker to make a film about the subject. So Glad I Made It, the Saga of Roger Salloom, America’s Best Unknown Songwriter, won six awards, was on the 2006 Grammy ballot, and received rave reviews across the U.S.

***Legendary synthesis wizard STEVE MOORE returns with his soft rock disco alter ego, LOVELOCK—stepping out of the time machine and jumping into your tape deck via Italians Do It Better. Picking up where his brilliant 2012 debut Burning Feeling left off, Moore comes back with a guitar driven, sax laced modern yacht rock soundscape. Imagine Christopher Cross stumbling into a smoke-filled after hours hole in the wall off the 101. Camera pans to the bar to reveal Michael McDonald & Alan Parsons red-eyed behind a few glasses of whiskey. “This album is inspired by sophisti-pop, yacht rock & R&B from the late 70’s & early 80’s. Not necessarily the hits though. Someone is meant to feel more like a collection of tracks from private press LPs. Crate digger gold that sounds both familiar & alien at the same time. Once while traveling in Italy, I bought a 2xLP collection of 'Top Hits of the 80’s'—most of the songs I had never heard before, yet they all gave me a sense of familiarity as they were all undoubtedly meant to sound like songs I have heard. That’s the sort of ‘uncanny valley’ type feeling I was chasing with this album.”—Steve Moore

Les Rallizes Denudes

(Blue Vinyl) Blind Baby Has It's Mother's Eyes
Phoenix

***Legendary Japanese rock outfit Les Rallizes Dénudés were formed in 1967 and incredibly, for a group that had only one official release (Oz Days Live, a double vinyl compilation release in 1973), played their last gig almost 30 years later in October 1996. The band's name apparently means "fucked up and naked," which more than adequately describes their music. Formed by band leader Mizutani Takashi, the music remained remarkably familiar over the years, and is best described as high volume, raw, lo-fi, repetitive, feedback-drenched guitar-noise fests with nods in the direction of The Velvet Underground and Blues Creation, but without the electronics. Radical left-wing politics were never far from the band's agenda, with one original band member (Wakabayashi) being involved in the Japanese Red Army's hijacking of a flight to North Korea. Consequently, the group's live appearances became less frequent and increasingly clandestine. All the band's albums were released in very small quantities, and because of the group's reputation for secrecy and violence, as well as the difficulty in tracking down their recordings, Les Rallizes Dénudés has assumed almost mythical status. Blind Baby Has It's Mothers Eyes sits at #11 on Julian Cope 's list of top Japanese albums. "Massive slabs of distortion inhabit every seam of this monstrously linear album"—Julian Cope ( Japrocksampler ). Reissue on 180-gram, blue vinyl; hand numbered editions.

Legendary downtown music master Daniel Carter meets Tobias Wilner from world-renowned electronic band Blue Foundation. Featuring Wu-Tang Clan bass player Djibril Toure & drum wiz Federico Ughi. As a band, they have played a number of concerts in NYC, including the Forward Festival 2016 and 2018, and are currently working on their second album. This group is the ultimate mix between the classic New York sound of the avant-garde (i.e., John Coltrane & Albert Ayler) combined with electronic manipulation and production.  Although this is the first album they have released as a group, the four musicians have collaborated on different projects for years. The group was first formed when drummer Federico Ughi envisioned an ensemble comprised of some of his favorite super talented people. This includes Daniel Carter, who Federico first met in 2001. The two quickly developed a strong playing partnership, going on to create many albums and tours around the world and eventually founding 577 Records and the Forward Festival together. Federico plays drums in Tobias Wilner’s group Blue Foundation, renowned for its Hollywood movie soundtracks such as the vampire series Twilight in addition to Miami Vice and a busy world tour schedule. Federico also plays with Djibril Toure in the group Major Taylor, one of the best punk rock bands to come out of Bedstuy, Brooklyn in the last 10 years. Djibril plays regularly with GZA, a founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan and he’s the bass player featured on a selection of Wu-Tangs legendary albums. ...

Allegiance And Conviction by Windy & Carl

Windy & Carl

Allegiance And Conviction
Kranky

Legendary Dearborn duo Windy & Carl have been crafting inner space electric guitar and bass vistas for nearly three decades now, but their latest feels as vital and vaporous as any peak opus in their vast catalog. Written and recorded across six years, the songs swirl between shoegaze minimalism and stargaze drift, over which Windy Weber whispers veiled poetic narratives of transformation, isolation, and escape. Allegiance And Conviction is their first album since 2012’s We Will Always Be. The six compositions are something of outlier in their catalog, shorter in nature than most on their previous releases. All of the tracks are saturated with Carl Hultgren’s signature guitar work, intimate constructions of murmurs, drones and his trademark layered filigree, gently amassed into alternately lighter and heavier than air atmospheres. Despite being their first full-length in more than half a decade, the album fully belongs to the bewitching galaxy of sound Windy & Carl innovated and within which they remain the sole occupants: music of thresholds and peripheries and eternities. Allegiance And Conviction is the multifaceted, contemporary take on their sound.

Redemption Of Zounds
Overground

Legendary English underground band Zounds first came to prominence in the early 1980s with a string of independent chart hits on Rough Trade and Crass Records. Growing out of the London-area squatter communities, they quickly became key figures in the burgeoning DIY / anarcho-punk scene and toured Europe with contemporaries such as The Mob, Poison Girls, Crass, The Birthday Party and many others. On record, their sound was more expansive than most punk of the era. In Rough Trade: Labels Unlimited, author Rob Young describes Zounds as “a distinctively paranoid and claustrophobic sonic crush that avoid[s] formulaic protest song.” Their Rough Trade album The Curse of Zounds! is now recognized as a classic of the genre and one of the most inspirational albums of the post-punk period. A notorious recluse, songwriter and lead singer Steve Lake has reunited Zounds only intermittently since the band’s early ’80s heyday, despite receiving numerous requests to record and tour. The ten songs he has written for The Redemption of Zounds retain all the hallmarks of the classic template: incisive lyrics, sharp guitars, satirical overtones, emotional terror and great, memorable tunes. It sounds totally at home in a modern world that Lake claims “is as bewildering, absurd, tragic and joyful as it ever was.”

Same Thoughts Different Day by Subhumans

Subhumans

Same Thoughts Different Day
Alternative Tentacles

Legendary Canadian punk group Subhumans emerged from the 1978 font of creativity that produced DOA and The Pointed Sticks. They have been part of the Alternative Tentacles family since the infamous 1981 Let Them Eat Jellybeans compilation (VIRUS004), and played shows with Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Black Flag, and Bad Brains. Their first album, Incorrect Thoughts, was released on Vancouver label Friends Records in 1980. The band always planned to make their older material available again, but a now-defunct San Francisco label had issued an unauthorized version of Incorrect Thoughts in the '80s which substituted some remixes without the band's knowledge, included tracks which hadn't made the cut for the original album, and changed the cover art. It was an unpleasant mystery for the band, and three decades later the former owner of that label asserted ownership over the original album, preventing its re-release without an expensive and contentious legal tussle. The Subhumans decided to meet the challenge to their ownership of their own material by rerecording all of the songs from Incorrect Thoughts, which they proceeded to do at the Hive Studios in Vancouver, assisted by Jesse Gander. Original members Brian Goble (vocals), Gerry Hannah (bass), Mike Graham (guitar), and newly-recruited drummer Jon Card (formerly with Personality Crisis, SNFU, and DOA among others) got together in 2005 to record a new album of original material, New Dark Age Parade, for Alternative Tentacles (VIRUS366) and the band had been reactivated into a live entity. The intent was neither to slavishly...

***"A legendary concert by one of the great unrecorded bands in free jazz history is here at last. WEBO, the third installment in the Black Editions Archive series of previously unreleased recordings from Milford Graves' private tape library, roars into the station June 21, 2024. For the first time, Charles Gayle, Milford Graves, & William Parker—three lions of the Black American jazz avantgarde—are finally heard together on record, presented here across three audiophile-quality LPs for two brutalizingly joyous hours of real ju-ju & musical mastery. The trio of Charles Gayle, Milford Graves, & William Parker gave only seven public performances between 1985 and 2013, and released no recordings. Their June 1991 two-night stand at the short-lived Lower East Side venue Webo, long referenced as a signal event in New York free jazz's 1990s resurgence, has been a topic of discussion among close followers of the music for decades. In the uncompromising grassroots spirit of the 1970s New York Musicians Organization and loft jazz movements from which they had emerged, the band produced and promoted the WEBO concerts themselves. Photography and audio recording were not allowed at the concerts, and this official recording, commissioned by the artists, was never released—until now. So vivid was the lore surrounding WEBO that it topped the list of recordings sought by Black Editions Archive from Graves' private collection. The tapes maximally substantiate eyewitness accounts describing extra-sensory levels of communication within the band, and the extraordinary clarity and impact of their performance. ***Sweden’s Legendary D-Beat Band AVSKUM return with their first new album since 2008, En Annan Värld Ar Möjlig (Another World Is Possible). Their fifth album has 17 new tracks of rage-filled D-beat hardcore supporting Indigenous rights, self-determination and attacking Fascism, Militarism, Misogyny and political corruption. Avskum’s sound has it’s roots in their 1982 origins at the earliest stages of Swedish hardcore punk, with harshly screamed vocals and quick blasting songs, underlined over the ensuing decades by a rock driven heaviness with searing guitar solos, thundering bass lines and rampaging drum attack. Recorded by KENKO at Communichaos Studios, the album features guest vocals from TOMPA from AT THE GATES & DISFEAR, TB from ASOCIAL & UNCURBED, and MATTIS from MAKABERT FYND. With two stunning cover illustrations by JORAN BARLOW to hammer home their vision of empowerment and resistance.. Avskum will tour the U.S. Midwest and the West Coast in September 2023 with Resistant Culture. No Export to Europe.

Musical Experiences by Dubuffet, Jean

Dubuffet, Jean

Musical Experiences
Etats-Unis

The legendary French painter and sculptor Jean Dubuffet exalted naivety and spontaneity in visual art, and his brazenly experimental recordings on Musical Experiences evince the same spirit through sound. He once reflected, “Certain unexpected windfalls ... come of improvising on an instrument one doesn’t really know how to use.” Dubuffet, who famously founded the art brut (or outsider art) movement, began making music in the early 1960s with avant-garde figure Asger Jorn. With no training, they played a range of instruments: saxophone, bassoon, detuned piano, hurdy-gurdy, cabrette, bombarde and so on. Soon, Dubuffet reserved a room in his home for making music and bought two tape-recorders in order to manually edit the results. He wrote fondly of the recordings’ crudeness and the sense that they “had no beginning and no end but were simply extracts taken haphazardly from a ceaseless and ever-flowing score.” Dubuffet’s discography begins in 1961 with the release Expériences Musicales, a six 10-inch record set produced in an edition of fifty with original artwork and lithographed sleeves. Musical Experiences, compiled by composer Ilhan Mimaroglu and released in 1973 on his Finnadar imprint, collects eight of the twenty pieces on the much sought-after Expériences Musicales. First-time vinyl reissue. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies on clear vinyl.

Next Year At Marienbad by Urinals

Urinals

Next Year At Marienbad
Happy Squid

***The legendary URINALS are back with their third long-player, Next Year at Marienbad. Sure to be another fan sing-along favorite, the record delivers thirteen high-energy tracks showing the Urinals haven’t taken their foot of the pedal. Formed in the first wave of Los Angeles punk in 1978, the Urinals forged a unique path by gigging with bands across the LA punk and post-punk spectrum, from hardcore (Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Minutemen) to paisley underground (The Last, Rain Parade, Bang[les]) to everything in between (Go-Go’s, X, Savage Republic, Gun Club). They morphed into 100 FLOWERS in the early ‘80s and released a critically acclaimed LP (recently reissued on vinyl by Superior Viaduct) and are back now as the Urinals, playing songs from all phases of their 35 year career. The Urinals are KEVIN BARRETT (drums), ROB ROBERGE (guitar/vocals) and JOHN TALLEY-JONES (bass/vocals). In the past few years the Urinals have headlined festivals from Calgary to Louisville, from Belgium to Beijing. They continue to perform on a regular basis, giving their fans a taste from the past (”I’m A Bug,” “Black Hole,” “Ack Ack Ack Ack”) mixed with songs from their current lineup. They band will be touring the US and Europe to promote NYAM. (STREET DATE - 2/17/2015)

***The legendary 1972 Warner Brothers album, produced by Van Dyke Parks & Andrew Wickham, Hot + Sweet features the finest Calypso vocal recordings ever produced by the man known as "The Calypso King of the World." The Mighty Sparrow's career spans over 40 years and 70 albums. He continues to redefine the true meaning of Calypso Power through his amazing ability-not only to put into words and tempo the exploits of SOCiety, but to crown it all with showmanship and appeal. The Mighty Sparrow is Slinger Francisco, Chief of The Yorubas, who has brought honor, glory, and dignity to an indigenous art form that was once scorned by the elite of Caribbean society. He utilizes his medium not just to entertain, but also to edify, enlighten, and educate. "Recorded during a hurricane in Miami, the power of the wind and rain whipping the studio were matched only by the power and beauty of these compositions, chosen by Andrew and myself as the greatest in Sparrow's prodigious catalogue." - Van Dyke Parks

*** The legendary lord of lascivious lyrics, the baron of badass R'n'B, the duke of dirty-ass rock'n'roll is finally back with a new one. And check out the disciples of sleazy soul & primitive raunch he's got with him: The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Countdowns, The Compulsive Gamblers, Cheater Slicks, The Dirtbombs and Stooges' Funhouse saxophonist Steve Mackay all contribute to The Black Godfather. 1999's Silky introduced a new generation to the Andre Williams experience, and recent converts appear to harbor an appropriately insatiable appetite for all things Andre. "Lap Dance," his recent 12-inch backed by the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, has even shown up as incidental music on HBO's highly rated and critically acclaimed The Sopranos. Williams' live shows in the USA and Europe have turned into full-on rhythm'n'blues and rock'n'roll rave-up tesimonials. Fans emerge sweaty, dazed and, somehow, cleansed by The Man's lewd, loud and licentious litany of life with the ladies. Fans, reviewers and fellow musicians all agree that Andre Williams's take on moderation is that it should be taken in moderation.

Nervous Gender’s legendary synthpunk LP Music From Hell burbles up from infernal depths to resurface on Dark Entries! Confrontational, unhinged, and unabashedly queer, Music from Hell is an unholy grail for fans of the strangest underbellies of post-punk, minimal synth, and early industrial music, and is presented here newly remastered and on expanded double LP. Nervous Gender (de)formed in LA in 1978 at the hands of Phranc, Gerardo Velaquez, Edward Stapleton, and Michael Ochoa. Phranc, the androgynous embodiment of the band’s name, left in 1980. Following her departure, a wide cast of LA freaks would find themselves drawn into the band’s orbit, including Alice Bag of the Bags, Paul Roessler of the Screamers, the Germs’ Don Bolles, and an 8-year old drummer named Sven Pfeiffer. In 1980, Nervous Gender appeared on the seminal Live at Target compilation alongside Factrix, uns, and Flipper. With the band’s notoriety cemented, Music from Hell followed in 1981 on Subterranean Records (as no LA label would touch this material). Side A, dubbed “Martyr Complex”, presents a more punk-forward sound with live drum salvos and slabs of aggressive synth. These twitchy, unsettling shockers ooze with the kind of snotty misanthropy that will endear them to fans of the Screamers or Crass. Side B, known as “Beelzebub Youth”, is a live performance the band labeled "an electronic bruto-canto dissertation on the banality of spiritual transcendence." Mutant melodies cede way to synthesized clangs, whirs, bleeps, manipulated tapes, and howls of despair. In addition to all the material from...

Fear God Honour The King by h M A S

h M A S

Fear God Honour The King
Homeless

Having brought legendary Tasmanian acts The Stickmen, Dacios and Night Terrors to vinyl and the accompanying wider audience, Homeless now presents its first archival release—the art-damaged spazz-punk of h M A S—with their unreleased LP, Fear God Honour The King. Almost two decades after being recorded, this album of lost recordings will be issued on vinyl (or any format) for the first time! Formed in the early '90s amongst the small town confines on the NW coast of Tasmania, BEN CROTHERS and DUNCAN ROBINSON found a new beginning in the music handed down from Ben’s older sister. Anything that came from reading NME and Select got them buying and listening to everything from Pixies, They Might Be Giants and Devo to XTC, Buzzcocks, Wire and Black Sabbath, not forgetting Tlot Tlot. In the time since its recording in 1997, the original master tapes have been lost and this single attempt at a mix is all that remains. In a way this makes Fear God Honour The King exactly like everything h M A S had always done before—spontaneous but flawed, pointless but essential. Remastered and remixed by MIKEY YOUNG and Ben Crothers. Packaged with an innersleeve with notes by JULIAN TEAKLE and ANDY HAZEL.“While the rest of the world was caught up in grunge, Britpop or the Spice Girls or intentionally reacting against these things, Duncan Robinson and Ben Crothers were listening to Devo and Pixies, obsessing about other Hobart bands, watching lots of David Lynch,...

***Reissue of this legendary album from 1970 featuring HIRO YANAGIDA, KIMIO MIZUTANI, and MOTOERU TAKAGI. Number seven on the Japrocksampler Top 50. Divine excessive jazz-rock stylings by this batch of period-visionaries presumably recorded sometime in 1970 by RUDY VAN GELDER and CREED TAYLOR at the Toshiba Records 1st Studio. All of that "real" psychedelic goo gets smeared about quite a bit; acoustic string flap AND electric gonzo-muff battle overdriven organ lines played by said MASAHIKO SATOH and his band of western pickups (LOUIS HAYNES on drums, JOCHEN STAUDT on bass). Furious jamming is meshed with some fine sub-George Russell 3rd-stream string/brass writhing and found-sound tape-spatter (machine guns, war-speak). Housed in a gatefold sleeve; on 180-gram vinyl.

Plastic Disaster by Little Cuts

Little Cuts

Plastic Disaster
Dirtnap

***DAVE HERNANDEZ of legendary garage punk band SCARED OF CHAKA formed LITTLE CUTS in Seattle during a break from touring duties with indie rockers THE SHINS in '08. His years with The Shins left him anxious for a return to the louder and more chaotic leanings of his earlier bands. ANDREW CHURCH was the obvious choice for wingman in the group. Having previously played and recorded with Hernandez in power rock outfit BROADCAST OBLIVION, he filled bass duties handily when not working with his other great band THE COPS. CURTIS JAMES of OLD HAUNTS had met Hernandez mid tour in the early ‘90s when he'd drummed for Olympia band EXCUSE 17, and it was total random coincidence that had him tattooing at a shop next door to Hazelwood, Church's bar in Seattle. He completed the three piece, and they set about recording a handful of CDRs that were passed around town, and played a handful of shows as well as releasing a single for Bag of Hammers. This new 7-inch was recorded by LARS FINBERG.

Shades Of Sarode
Ammp

Son of the legendary Sarode Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, Alam has been touching the hearts of audiences worldwide for the past 15 years. Since his initial training into the Maihar Seni Gharana at the age of seven, Alam was blessed to learn and live in the traditional stye of Guru and student. Ali Akbar Khan’s careful crafting and guidance shows in each note as well as in Alam’s imaginative way of expressing the ancient ragas passed down from the courts of Emperor Akbar by Mian Tansen in the 16th century. His is joined on this CD by Salar Nader, one of the youngest and most sought-after talents of his generation. A virtuoso tabla player with many recordings under his belt including the theatrical score for the stage premiere of Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner”. “Making “Shades of Sarode” was my attempt at playing shorter, improvised pieces of Indian classical music on Sarode. A raga’s duration can usually last up to an hour or longer when played in it’s entirety. There are many sections to a performance which can be greatly elaborated upon, but for this album I chose to present the listener with an array of ragas and different moods to experience in a shorter amount of time.” - Alam

Ike Yard remain a legendary band of early '80s New York City – at once immensely influential, yet obscured by a far-too-brief initial phase. Their debut EP, the dark and absorbing Night After Night, sounds almost like a different group, so rapidly would Ike Yard evolve towards the calmly menacing electro throb of their self-titled LP. Originally released on Factory in 1982, the album put Ike Yard's indelible mark on the synth-driven experimental rock scene then emerging all over the planet. While historical analogues would be Cabaret Voltaire's Red Mecca or Front 242's Geography, opening track "M. Kurtz" makes starkly clear that Ike Yard is a far heavier proposition. With a thick porridge of bass, ringing guitar and strangled/stunted layers of voice, these six pieces are densely packed and perversely danceable. "Loss" sounds like a minimal techno track that could have been made last week, while "Kino" combines Soviet-era imagery with sparse soundscapes à la African Head Charge's Environmental Studies. Ike Yard somehow pull off the toughest trick in modern music: making repetition hypnotically compelling through subtle variation. The effect of Ike Yard's first LP can be heard in many genres – from industrial dance labels like Wax Trax to electro-punk bands and innumerable European groups (Lucrate Milk, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, etc.). The fact that the cover artwork does not include any photos of the band, but rather features the original catalogue number (FACT A SECOND) only further illustrates the release's importance and Ike Yard's timeless mystique.

***CONGREGACION was the most legendary of the many excellent bands of the early 1970s Chilean music scene—one could easily say that for many people, this album has had the impact of a religious experience. There is good reason for that: Congregación’s music has a highly evocative sense of space, using natural sounds, native Andean instruments, and acoustic textures to foreground ecologist and mystic ANTONIO SMITH’s soaring melodies and deeply felt, philosophical lyrics. The results make this one of those perfect albums that works just as well on a Sunday morning as it does late at night. If things had worked out differently for Smith and Congregación, this album might be as well-known (and well-loved) as comparable albums—comparable masterpieces—Milton Nascimento's “Clube de Esquina,” and Joyce and Nelson Angelo's eponymous album. Unfortunately, Smith’s lyrics earned him the enmity of the Chilean military dictatorship; he was forced to flee the country and “Viene…” (IRT, 1972) proved to be the band’s only release. Still, we’re lucky to have this album, with its perfect sequence of gentle, undulating, heavily-textured arrangements supporting Smith’s plaintive, intimate and searching vocals. The result is an atmosphere of peace and enlightenment, with deep and introspective moments of great quality; incredibly beautiful. Congregación band member CARLOS VITTINI gave some insight into Smith's charismatic mysticism: "I still get excited about how a musician has a great place in capturing the sensibility of the people. I knew the immense creative capacity of Antonio. From the sound of a bird, he speaks, capturing in...

***Many bands are called legendary, few are. Among those few are CRUSHED BUTLER, whose assualt on the UK rock scene in 1969-70 laid out the dynamics that were to follow in the best punk, glam and pub rock records of the seventies. From the anthemic R&B classic "High School Dropout" to the pure punk mayhem of "It's My Life" and "Factory Grime," and the heavy Sabbath-esque psych of "Love Is All Around Me," this has long been a record deserving of wider accessibility. This edition adds a second version of "High School Dropout" and an previously unreleased instrumental recording, "Let It Ring" to the six tracks first pressed on the Dig The Fuzz 10-inch in the ‘90s to make this the definitive vinyl release with original cover art, inner sleeve, cartoon and poster by AVI SPIVAK (Humanbeing Lawnmower) and Crushed Butler's DARRYL READ that contains the band's complete surviving recordings.

After 20 years of legendary live shows and twelve albums that have been hailed as country punk classics, DASH RIP ROCK is still kickin’ ass as the undisputed kings of Southern Party Rock! The band started in Baton Rouge as a rockabilly trio, playing punk as if they were THE STRAY CATS, then belting out country standards as if they were SEX PISTOLS tunes, and have taken their hard-rockin’, hard-drinkin’ Southern-fried Rawk to dive bars and rock festivals relentlessly ever since! As evidenced on this compilation of outrageously raucous countrified rootsrock, DASH RIP ROCK have serious chops, but are intent on not taking life too seriously. This career-spanning compilation provides the perfect introduction to DASH RIP ROCK for the uninitiated, and a great drinking soundtrack for the band’s beer-hounding faithful. Bottoms up! “The time has come for the rest of the country to climb aboard and revel in (DASH RIP ROCK’s) barrage of crunchy guitars, toe-tappin’ beats, and amusing lyrics.”- Billboard Magazine

***“Amazing work from the legendary MULATU ASTATKE—one of Ethiopia's funkiest musicians of the ‘70s, making a rare appearance here on this lost American recording! The album has been a holy grail for years amongst beatheads—loved for its killer blend of weird rhythms, sweet funk, and super-dope vibes—and the grooves on the set are really unique—slow, snakey, and with a sinister, almost other-worldly feel. There's not nearly as much vibes on Mulatu's Ethiopian recordings—and their appearance here really gives the set a nice American sort of twist—almost Roy Ayers meets Sun Ra with a hot dose of African funk thrown in for good measure!”—Dusty Groove America. ***Known for his career with legendary punk band SWINGIN’ UTTERS, DARIUS KOSKI’s abilities as a song writer and musician are undeniable. Though many fans only associate him with his punk rock success, the realm of his expertise expands far beyond. Darius’ first official solo album, Sisu, is the perfect window into the lesser known side of his song writing. Of course, there were occasional glimpses along the way. Swingin’ Utters classics like “Fruitless Fortunes,” “Glass House,” and “Shadows & Lies” were originally written as solo material. But now, with the release of Sisu, we get a full view. Comprised of 15 tracks, Sisu is a veritable grab bag of acoustic genres and instrumentation, replete with guitar, piano, banjo, accordion, violin, glockenspiel, vibraphone, melodica and ukulele. From the haunting honkytonk piano on “Paper Tigers” to the galloping rhythm and surf guitar accents on “Howls From the Gale,” Sisu weaves its way through country, blues, acoustic indie, bluegrass, and both American and Irish folk. Although every track highlights a unique genre, each song shares the strong sense of melody Darius honed through years of writing hit songs for the Swingin’ Utters. (STREET DATE - 4/07/2015)

Schizophrenic Noisy Torment by Necrobutcher

Necrobutcher

Schizophrenic Noisy Torment
Nuclear War Now

***Necrobutcher are among the many legendary bands that emerged in the late 1980s and gave birth to a primitive strain of Black Metal that is unique to Brazil. This LP collects all of the existing output from this band whose approach deviated considerably in certain ways from more iconic Brazilian Death Metal bands. Both of the demos as well as the rehearsal recordings featured here were recorded in 1989. Necrobutcher adhered to no particularly discernible set of rules. Their sound is rugged and blown out. Their songwriting lies predominantly in the space between Death Metal and Grindcore. Their imagery and lyrical content are decidedly blackened and blasphemous. Few of their songs extend beyond the one-minute mark with many clocking in at 30 seconds or less. Indeed, the only long track in their catalog is their cover of Sarcofago’s “Nightmare.” Most of Necrobutcher’s demo material is fast and violent. The guitars are brittle and wretched. The rhythm section is furious and out of control. Vocals, like distorted howls, saturate the sound when present. Brought together, the effect is alcoholic and unholy. Words do little to convey the effect of these demo and rehearsal recordings. Necrobutcher’s music is about sensory destruction and, as such, must be felt to be appreciated. Includes a booklet.

Queen Of The Flat Top Guitar by Hughes, Lena

Hughes, Lena

Queen Of The Flat Top Guitar
Tompkins Square

***Impossibly rare recordings by the legendary finger-picker LENA HUGHES. A musical “amateur” that best exemplified true artistry, Lena Hughes was born in Grape Grove Township, Missouri in 1904. Though she never recorded any 78s and only one LP, Hughes was most influential through her steady performances at various fiddler conventions and folk festivals throughout the Ozarks. She was an excellent fiddler, banjoist and guitar picker who retained the largely extinct repertoire of parlor pieces and the variety of specialized tuning that were necessary to play them. She lived most of her life in Ludlow, Missouri and passed away in 1998. Lena Hughes repertoire can be divided roughly in half: finger-picked numbers adapted from fiddle tunes and recast parlor guitar pieces gleaned from popular sentimental songs, hymns and 19th century airs. As a faithful attendee at folk festivals, Hughes was accompanied by her guitar-playing husband JAKE. Her most mesmerizing performances, such as “Pearly Dew,” “Spanish Fandango,” and “Kentucky Moon Waltz,” depend heavily upon the resonance of the open chord as it relates to the picking of the melodic line, primarily on one string. This tonal reliance is most similar to the “celestial octave” that Washington Phillips employs, with similar effect on his “Train Your Child.” This ethereal harmonic technique, which seems so natural in Hughes’ playing, is the holy grail for most finger-picking guitarists. Her lack of pretense and her mastery of this repertoire is what defines her legendary status.

***The debut full length album by legendary Southern California Punk band Mad Parade is finally back in print. Originally released in 1987 on BYO Records (7 Seconds / Youth Brigade / SNFU). The album has long been out of print. The album is a Southern California Punk classic, Influenced by the original wave of UK and American Punk bands such as 999, Generation X, Sex Pistols, Dead Boys, New York Dolls and the Damned, Mad Parade wrote amazing anthemic catchy songs. Blessed with a singer that could really sing, and a band loaded with musicians that could really play and it showed. The album is full of fantastic songs, produced by Paul Mahern of the Zero Boys. At the time the polished sound of the albums big guitars and crisp vocals did not go over well with the typical Hardcore punk crowd, but it was a favorite among fans of the original wave of Punk who appreciated the sophistication and quality of the song writing as well as the sound of the album. Years later many of those Hardcore bands would change their sound and attempt to write songs beyond the confines of what was considered Hardcore/Punk but Mad Parade did earlier and better. The new reissue includes enhanced mastering and additional packaging along with a bonus track not found on the original release.

The 'Best Historical Album' nomination is the first ever for any rap album in Grammy history, and comes a little over 30 years after the group released their solo project as a grassroots, independent effort. In a time and region underscored by gangsta rap, G-funk, and record sales, the Freestyle Fellowship was largely built on collaborative community, long term friendships, and artistic willpower. What most defined the group is not only their lyrical dexterity, but their commitment to an authentic, do-it-yourself spirit that can often elude the most commercially successful rappers. Highlighted by their free-flowing, jazz-inspired cadences and multi-rhythmic flows delivered in obtuse ways—whether rapping slightly off beat, meandering in and out of alternating patterns, or coming in at rapid fire bursts—the Freestyle Fellowship helped to build the West Coast's underground movement, drawing inspiration from East Coast boom bap, spoken word poetry, and the socially explosive world around them."—OkayPlayer

Of all the releases on Italy’s legendary Cramps Records, Raul Lovisoni and Francesco Messina’s seminal LP from 1979 has long remained among the most beloved. Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo not only introduced the world to the work of two gifted composers, but also is notable for being produced by electronic pioneer Franco Battiato. A sister album to Prati Bagnati would be Giusto Pio’s breathtaking Motore Immobile, likewise graced with the maestro’s gentle hand around the same time. Lovisoni and Messina are both central figures within the Italian avant-garde. Part of a generation of artists who contributed to a radical rethinking of musical practices and composition, they reveal Minimalism as it’s rarely known: delicate melodies, subtle harmonic interplay, incorporating diverse creative traditions and slowly giving way to an ever-expanding open space. Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo’s meditative title track, inspired by René Daumal’s surrealist novel Le Mont Analogue, features Messina on synthesizer and Michele Fedrigotti’s impressionistic piano, while on Lovisoni’s “Hula Om” and “Amon Ra,” solo harp, crystal glasses and Juri Camisasca’s radiant vocal drones further ascend into the stratosphere. Skirting the outer edges of ambient, new age and experimental music, Prati Bagnati has a transformative beauty unlike anything else. Superior Viaduct’s edition reproduces the original sleeve design and is recommended for fans of Jon Hassell, Luciano Cilio and Popol Vuh.

***Another great album from Canada's legendary Paragon label, a set of super bluesy psych demo tapes from 1968. The band's album Stink was received not just as a great album of electric blues, but as some sort of revelation when it appeared in the second half of 1969. But lead guitarist MIKE MCKENNA had spent time ('67-'68) in the UGLY DUCKLINGS, and had already developed a 'local hero' tag by playing hard electric blues as a member of the legendary LUKE AND THE APOSTLES. Together, he and JOE MENDELSON made arrestingly earthy music, which soon attracted another of Toronto's rock gods of the day, bassist DENNY GERRARD from the PAUPERS, whose legendary talents had served him well on the stage of the Monterey Pop Festival, where his work with the Paupers was (and still is) considered a highlight. The material included on this disc, rough and searing demo material, is arguably even more rare and interesting than that on their classic McKenna Mendelson Mainline Stink album.

Dusted In Memphis (and Elsewhere) by Chilton, Alex

Chilton, Alex

Dusted In Memphis (and Elsewhere)
Bangkok

***First time re-issue of the legendary ALEX CHILTON album Dusted In Memphis, originally released in 1980. For many, this is Alex's finest. Includes a second bonus album full of unreleased material; covers, alternate versions, fantastic demos, and infamous complete KUT radio session. All culled from the period between 1975 and 1980, a troubled—but prolific and brilliant—time for Chilton. This is deconstructed rock n roll, perfect pop songs perversely pureed, punkabilly before the term was coined, chaotic, trashy, beautiful. Allegedly, the only copy of these recordings that anyone associated with was lost in the house fire that claimed Alex Chilton's mother's life. If this is true, and the masters have been lost, it is truly a great, great shame as these are possibly the best post-BIG STAR recordings of Alex's long solo career. This quite legendary bootleg bridges the gap between Sister Lovers (1978) and Like Flies On Sherbert (1979). It contains the Elektra demos with some songs that might be regarded amongst Big Star's finest if they would have found a proper release. This is a great shame as it is an excellent document of where Alex was at during this stage of his career (he wooed the critics during his time in NY, but not the major labels). File between: Skip Spence's Oar (1969), Panther Burns's Behind The Magnolia Curtain (1981), Neil Young's Tonight's the Night (1975) and early Cramps.

Case Studies In Early Taxidermy Techniques by Skin Crime

Skin Crime

Case Studies In Early Taxidermy Techniques
Hospital Productions

***The creator and main operator of legendary and eerie label Self Abuse Records, PATRICK O'NEIL founded SKIN CRIME in 1993-94 out of the morbid surrealism of mother project HANGED MAN'S ORGASM. One of the earliest and most influential American noise institutions from the ’90s, Skin Crime is the missing link between European musique concrète, Japanese noise, and the gritty abstract electronics of what became the glory and gory days of American harsh noise—the largely undocumented moment when noise broke away from industrial to destroy further its electronic roots. No mere bedroom project, Skin Crime distinguished itself as a real dedicated live noise band with a rotating lineup surrounding their core as a three-piece; highly detailed, ascending compositions offset with their forceful and dynamic textures. Includes: Desecration (Self Abuse 1994); Prenatal (Self Abuse 1994); Eyestrain (Self Abuse 1995); Electroshock Treatment (Self Abuse 1995); Genital Modification (G.R.O.S.S. 1995); Urge (Bloodlust! 1996); Whorebutcher (Mother Savage 1996); Burn (Less Than Zero 1996); King Of The Death Match (Spite 1999); Audio Pathology (Armed And Loaded 1998); Tsunami (Alienation 2000); Parasite (Xerxes 2001); Skin Crime (Hospital Productions 2003); Trauma (Self Abuse 1996); Monster (Self Abuse 1997); previously unreleased studio and live recordings; early versions of Audio Pathology tracks; compilation and split tracks. ***JACK DALRYMPLE has cultivated a near legendary status with his involvement in ONE MAN ARMY, SWINGIN’ UTTERS, DEAD TO ME and THE REVOLTS. Of course, few musicians in punk rock possess a calling card like Jack’s velvety vocals, but his song writing and guitar work are just as renowned. All three talents are on full display in Jack’s latest endeavor, TOYGUITAR. Filled out by MILES PECK, ROSIE GONCE and PAUL OXBORROW, all outstanding musicians in their own right, toyGuitar churns out a hyper-elevated level of garage rock. Based on the raw fuzz of ‘70s protopunk and complemented by intricate guitar leads, unbelievably hook laden melodies, and captivating lead and backing vocals, toyGuitar’s ultra-stylized sound even incorporates elements of surf, ‘60s soul, and power pop. In This Mess is toyGuitar’s first full-length and first release on Fat. From the Bowie-esque twinge of “Human Hyenas,” to an attitude reminiscent of The Stooges on “In My Head,” to the hypnotic vibe of “Roller Coasters,” every track on In This Mess offers something unique without ever losing the album’s pervasive jolt of energy. The Graveyard Theme / The Marble Orchard by Graveyard Five

Graveyard Five

The Graveyard Theme / The Marble Orchard
Lysergic Sound

***The first ever reissue of the legendary GRAVEYARD FIVE single: 'The Graveyard Theme' b/w 'The Marble Orchard' (Stanco SR-102), one of the true “holy grails” of garage rock. This is truly one of the rarest 45’s in the world, with only a handful of original copies known to exist; no surprise then that they sell for more than $4,500! 'The Graveyard Theme,' an exercise in fuzz guitar excess, was apparently inspired by a Ouija board session. The B side is the fuzz soaked reverb-laden monster, 'The Marble Orchard', which tells the true tale of the creepy, wet October night the band spent in the cemetery; they were convinced they saw something move from behind a tombstone and then heard “a wolfpack howl”. If the circumstances and subject matter of these songs isn’t creepy enough, the recording studio where these songs were recorded was supposedly haunted by a spectre that provided guest background vocals in the form of a growling noise that’s clearly audible near the end of 'The Marble Orchard.'

Dark Entries celebrates its 15th anniversary with legendary synth-punk deviants Crash Course in Science. Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago, and Michael Zodorozny formed CCIS in 1979 after meeting at art school in Philadelphia. As a gesture born of equal parts punk irreverence and brute necessity, the band incorporated toy instruments and kitchen appliances into their aggressive, angular sound. Their anthems “Cardboard Lamb” and “Flying Turns” from 1981’s Signals From Pier Thirteen EP have been staples in adventurous DJ sets for over 40 years - yet some of their finest work is to be found on Near Marineland, a full-length LP recorded in 1981 but remained unreleased in its time. Near Marineland shows the band moving into more diverse and polished territory (although it’s still as abrasive as sandpaper). Tracks like “No More Hollow Doors” and “Jump Over Barrels” highlight CCIS’s singular knack for embedding infectiously monotone hooks in their stiff-yet-funky grooves. Elsewhere we see CCIS going fully unhinged, like on the searing “Someone Reads” or the demented “Pompeii Spared”, where a spray of honks is barely glued together by a frantic synthetic pulse. While this masterwork of malfunctioning analog electronics has surfaced on a few occasions - this first time stand alone remaster includes four never-before-released bonus tracks and includes a lyric sheet. Near Marineland is crucial listening for all devotees of synth-punk and minimal electronics.

Chicken Fat
Jackpot

The 1967 Impulse Records legendary Funk/Soul Instrumental masterpiece album Chicken Fat. If you haven’t heard Chicken Fat yet, get ready because the LP won’t leave your turntable until your jaw stops hitting the floor. Sourced from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray. All Analog Process (AAA) Initially working as a guitar player for such greats as Sonny Boy Williamson & Etta James, Impulse Records eventually offered Mel Brown the chance to record his own material. Recorded in 1967 in Hollywood, CA, for the Impulse record label, Brown amassed a group of session musicians who had played with Charles Mingus, Marvin Gaye, and Dizzy Gillespie. Much of the album was arranged by Oliver Nelson, who worked with Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Jimmy Smith and more. His touch is felt all over the record and helps solidify the journey. These recording sessions also reflected the Sunset Strip and the energy of late ‘60s Los Angeles so incredibly, you can almost hear the go-go boots hit the floor to dance til they drop.

Fantastic Life by Helvetia

Helvetia

Fantastic Life
Moone Records

***In 2005 after the break up of legendary slow-core band, DUSTER, and throughout his tenure playing with BUILT TO SPILL over the past decade, HELVETIA has been the primary creative output of JASON ALBERTINI. In January of 2020, Helvetia quietly uploaded a new album titled Fantastic Life to bandcamp. Their first new music since 2017’s Sunchaser EP. Albertini returned to his roots and recorded/produced this album entirely on a 4-track cassette recorder. Fantastic Life is a slow churning wave with bursts of agitated fits. The aesthetic feels as if it is cut from the same cloth as their 2007 album The Acrobats. Woozy off-kilter experimentation littered with moments of sweetness and pop gems. Albertini’s guitar playing and effortless vocal performances have always lived in another plain. Everything is loosely tied together but elegant. Even if everything fell apart, it would be embraced. Helvetia’s sincerity is unmistakable and unforced. In contrast to the album title and sonic emotion, the lyrical themes are dark and defeated. However, it feels as though he is at peace with the present. “What a fantastic life” Albertini repeats nonchalantly, but almost sarcastically while smirking, throughout the title track. As if to say, “Things are fucked, and will always be, but I really do love being alive.”

***Formed in 2008 by DOMINIC FINBOW from legendary UK doom abusers MOSS, and NICK and ADAM (of Vancouver’s scum cult RADIOACTIVE VOMIT, GOATSBLOOD, DEATHWINDS and CEREMONIAL BLOODBATH), and influenced by the tormented legacies of forebearers Grief, Noothgrush, Eyehategod, Burning Witch, Corrupted, Goatsblood, Winter, Melvins, Leechmilk, etc., Canadian sludge-doom aberration Nightfucker coagulated in 2008 around the fetid, stagnant gutters above Vancouver’s filth-clotted stormdrains, as a reflection in primitive sludge/doom and as an exercise in the aural evisceration of the most unnameable inhumanity. In it's appalling rejection of sanity and cleanliness, on their self-titled full-length album Nightfucker spew forth a churning miasma of slow moving and gut-wrenching terror conceived with the sole goal of representing in the most repulsive way possible the most degraded forms of human life, and explore themes addiction, abuse, suicide, hallucinations, delusions, mental illness, self-harm, and complete human collapse with revolting lucidity.

Slash Your Face by Dogs

Dogs

Slash Your Face
Last Laugh

***THE DOGS came raging out of the legendary Motor City rock scene of the late '60’s and early ’70s, which spawned such musical touchstones as the Stooges, MC5, Amboy Dukes, Up, and other lesser known but equally ferocious proto-punk acts, The Dogs packed all the feral energy and cultural angst of that era into their live shows and an enduring set of recordings. The famous 3-song Slash Your Face EP hit the indie scene in 1978 culled from the historic live shows at the famous Mabuahy Gardens in San Francisco. This EP has been the fave of bootleggers and fans for 40 years. The band is still together and delivering the hard edged angst ridden Detroit Rock with their vibrant political attitudes and hi energy riffs.

Let There Be Noise by Dum Dum Boys

Dum Dum Boys

Let There Be Noise
In The Red

“Often obscured by the ascent of Flying Nun’s legendary roster is New Zealand’s late 1970s / early 1980s punk scene. Based in Auckland, a cadre of acts influenced by The Ramones and Stooges briefly thrived. The Dum Dum Boys—the first NZ punk band to record and release a full-length in their native country—were hooked on the Ann Arbor sounds of Iggy Pop.  “The Dum Dum Boys’ Let There Be Noise (1981) is chock-full of James Williamson and Deniz Tek riffage; it also contains elements of Iggy Pop’s nihilism. Take the lyrics to “Something To Say”—it’s refrain repeatedly asking ‘What am I living for?’—and juxtapose them to the band’s namesake track from Pop’s The Idiot (1977): ‘What happened to Zeke? He’s dead on jones, man.’ ‘Stalking The Streets’ taps into the meaninglessness of James Taylor and Dennis Wilson’s Two-Lane Blacktop journey through the American Southwest. “The Dum Dum Boys understood the proto-punk sounds of 1970s Ann Arbor and Cleveland. More importantly, they also got the vibe. Life stinks—sometimes in the places (Auckland) you’d least expect it.  “As the title suggests, Let There Be Noise is anything but a record incessantly focused on introspective doom and gloom. ‘Don’t Be A Bitch’ rivals Radio Birdman’s ‘I-94’ for lyrical thick-headedness—like sticking a hot 454 in a Ford Falcon gasser, the song’s simultaneously awesome and dumb. That’s a difficult balance to strike.  “Let There Be Noise (1981) was self-released and copies quickly became damn near unobtanium, even in New Zealand. (I should...

Reissue of 1981’s classic first recording by legendary San Francisco band Crucifix. This EP’s raw Sabbath-fueled punk, Shaggs-like musicianship and honest teenage angst provoked one reviewer at the time to write, “it makes you feel like going out and bludgeoning an old lady to death.” Recorded at Tom Mallon Studios in San Francisco in 1981, and originally released on Universal Records, this long out-of-print five track EP contains the band’s defining anthem of the period, “You’re Too Old.”

Lost Muscle Shoals Recordings
End Of An Ear

***Reissue of the first album recorded by the legendary Austin singer-songwriter who was tragically murdered in 1989. Recorded with Muscle Shoals studio musicians in 1984, the album was never distributed due to “some trouble with the law” resulting in the confiscation of most of the 500 copies originally pressed. These recordings find BLAZE FOLEY in a rare studio setting performing ten of his well-known compositions including the apparently timeless resistance song, Oval Room, originally written with Ronald Reagan in mind. The outstanding production values and musicianship breathe fresh air into these classic Blaze compositions. The original recordings have been digitally mastered by Austin engineer MARK HALLMAN.  Foley’s songs have been recorded by Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Lyle Lovett and others. Lucinda Williams’ “Drunken Angel,” and Townes Van Zandt’s “Blaze’s Blues,” personal tributes to their good friend Foley, have added to a legacy once nearly forgotten. A major motion picture on Blaze directed by Ethan Hawke is in production and scheduled for theatrical release in 2018.  Lost Art Records previously released five Foley albums including the soundtrack CD to the acclaimed Foley documentary, “Duct Tape Messiah” by filmmaker Kevin Triplett.

What’cha Gonna Do by Christopher

Christopher

What’cha Gonna Do
Lion Productions

***Official authorized reissue of the legendary psychedelic LP by Christopher from South Carolina. One of the absolute best American psychedelic LPs of the 1960’s, and one of the rarest—a copy went for close to $4,000 the last time an original copy sold online, and nearly double that changed hands off-line for an original! Every song is of the highest quality (all originals too), with an accessible sound the suggests that the band could have had more widespread success, had they ever made it out of their native South Carolina. Originally pressed in 1969 to use as a demo, the album is a mix of trippy lysergic lyrics with flanged vocals (among other effects), fine vocal harmonies, extended jamming, and a transcendent quality expressed with gutsy and creative guitar work. Includes a 12-page full-size booklet with rare photos, stories from the road and complete lyrics.

In 1962, legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans collaborated for the first time on record with jazz guitarist Jim Hall to create the landmark album Undercurrent. And even though it is a two-person improvisational affair, it is almost unfathomable that these two giants alone fill up all the grooves on this record. The thoughtful interplay between these two musicians created such a beautiful, lush, and emotional journey that their work influenced many. At the time of this recording, Bill Evans was one of the top jazz pianists (his performance with Miles Davis on Kind Of Blue is still a high-water mark), but he had stopped performing and recording after the death of his peer, bassist Scott LaFaro. Eventually, he was persuaded to return to music, and this was one of the first recordings upon his return. Guitarist Jim Hall - who had worked with Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny Rollins, and Chico Hamilton - started his partnership with Evans during this time. Recorded over two sessions in April and May 1962, the two have that beautifully unspoken musical language of give and take; their recordings are refreshingly busy but also incredibly sparse. These two giants understand that intertwining their personalities and harmonic styles could create greatness. This notable re-issue is an all-analog production affair—AAA Mastered and cut live by audio guru Kevin Gray (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Charles Mingus)—and it’s never sounded better. So dim the lights and let this music breathe with you; it’s an incredible listen and an essential album for...

After forty-five years of leading legendary punks D.O.A., the man they call Joey Shithead aka Joe Keithley, has a new solo album out on Sudden Death Records—don’t worry, D.O.A. is still touring! Stand has a rootsy, rebellious tone, as Keithley combines acoustic and electric guitar on this timely and politically charged album. Many have compared Keithley to a modern day Woody Guthrie or Pete Seeger because he has spent a lifetime standing up for what’s right through his music and through his actions—Stand befits that ethic and long-held tradition. The songs cover a wide range of emotions. There’s timely political stuff like “The Warrior Lives Again,” “Fentanyl Blues,” “This Machine Kills Fascists,” and “Ginger Goodwin.” Poignant songs include “Lookin’,” “For A World,” “People Power,” and a cover of D.O.A.’s “2+2.” Keithley even digs into movies and TV with his spaghetti western-inspired “Man With No Name” and an ode to Star Trek called “Men For All Ages.” He really hits the mark, as he covers songs from his idols Johnny Cash, Leadbelly and Stompin’ Tom Conners. On Stand, one gets a wide array of Keithley’s talents: from his vocals that have never covered such a wide range, to his sterling guitar playing, to his powerful songwriting ability. To make sure the album had the right tone, Keithley got the right people to accompany him, which includes one of the best acoustic rhythm sections in Canada, Leon Power and Darren Parris, and also great keyboards from Chris Gestrin, with Jessie Zubot...

How does one follow up one of the most legendary, yet rarest albums said to signal the birth of doom metal? If you’re Randy Holden, you give everyone about fifty years to catch up, then casually drop a tastefully modernized reinterpretation of that sound. Population III picks up where Holden’s 1969 solo debut left off, updated with several decades worth of technological advances and personal hindsight.  Following his tenure in proto-metal pioneers Blue Cheer in 1969, the guitarist aimed for more control over his next project. Thus, Randy Holden - Population II was born, the duo naming itself after the astronomical term for a particular star cluster with heavy metals present. Along with drummer / keyboardist Chris Lockheed, Holden created what many say is one of the earliest forms of doom metal.  Their six-song debut album Population II delves into leaden sludge, lumbering doom and epic soaring riffs that sound free from all constraints of the era. However, troubles with the album’s original 1970 release bankrupted Holden, who subsequently left music for over two decades. For good reason, it’s widely hailed as a masterpiece, and until finally getting a proper formal release in 2020 on Riding Easy Records, was a longtime Holy Grail for record collectors.  Flash forward forty years to 2010, one finds the guitarist / vocalist quietly coaxed into recording a followup album by Holden superfan and Cactus member Randy Pratt. Joined by drummer Bobby Rondinelli (who has played with Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, Rainbow), the trio...

The Gizmos Eps 1976-1978 by Gizmos

Gizmos

The Gizmos Eps 1976-1978
Gulcher

***"THE LEGEND OF THE GIZMOS 1976-1978 - Are we legendary yet? Infamous? An embarrassment? One version of the myth begins in 1974 when I met Ken Highland and Bob Richert in Bloomington, Indiana. A couple years later, just as Ken was about to enter the Marine Corps, Bob convinced him to make a record. Ken brought together various friends to become his instant band the Gizmos. No gigs, almost no rehearsals--ust some songs and a day in a 'studio' (a guy’s spare bedroom). And voila! The Gizmos became the first Indiana punk-rock band, even though we were barely a band, and neither Ken nor I were in Indiana for very long. Somehow we came together again in 1977 to record enough for two more EPs, played two live shows at the Bloomington library, and disappeared again (until our 2014 return). Ted Niemiec was the one original Gizmo who remained in Bloomington, and producer/manager Bob formed another band around him. Most importantly, guitarist/songwriter Dale Lawrence joined the new group. This lineup acted like a real band--played lots of shows. They even did a short tour that resulted in three songs from the fourth Gizmos EP being recorded at Max’s Kansas City in NYC. But eventually Ted also quit, leaving Dale to regroup a third time for a Gizmos lineup that included zero original members. But that story happens after this story (Dale’s Gizmos did a split LP and recorded lots of archival stuff that has been released since then). So, y’know,...

Un/finished Musics Vol. 2 - Astral Disaster Sessions
Prescription

***These rare recordings were recorded as part of the legendary Prescription label subscription-only album series in the late 1990's that resulted in the "Astral Disaster” album. Halloween 1998: Coil were invited to record at Sun Dial's studios beneath the London Bridge Hop Exchange—a studio first know as Samurai Studios, originally built and owned by Iron Maiden. The premises in Victorian times had been a debtors prison, with three underground levels—and the original chains, manacles and wrought iron prison doors. This caught the attention of John Balance, who was very keen to record there. With Gary Ramon's help, Coil developed a number of tracks, some of which resulted in the "Astral Disaster" album.   But there were other tracks recorded during those Halloween sessions, including the recordings on this very limited LP release, "Astral Disaster Sessions Un/finished Music Vol. 2.”  The album includes all previously unissued mixes and alternative versions, and includes 'The Mothership,’ which was the first version of a track which was later remade and re-named during the sessions as 'The Mothership and the Fatherland.’

Fight Back by DOA

DOA

Fight Back
Sudden Death

D.O.A., Canada’s legendary pioneering punks who set the bar high for punk and basically invented hardcore, are ready to rip it up on the occasion of their 40th anniversary. They have a brand new album: Fight Back, and they are embarking on a worldwide tour to support this impressive new effort, taking on all opposition and laying down a punk rock path of wild music and free thought. Their rough and ready line up is led by the godfather of hardcore, Joe Shithead Keithley (guitar, vocals), and he is more than ably accompanied by the manic rhythm section of Paddy Duddy (drums) and Corkscrew (bass). Early reviews are saying that this album is the most innovative the band has done since War On 45. Released on Keithley’s own label Sudden Death, this is a scathing and timely piece. dealing with all manner of unseemly low characters and issues. The album opens with acerbic “You Need an Ass Kickin’ Right Now,” then rips right into the startling “Killer Cops,” then smashes into the anthemic “Time To Fight Back,” which is street punk resistance at its fiercest. The band rips through the timely “Gonna Set You Straight” with violent and natural ease, same goes with the vitriolic “Just Got Back From the USA.” The album takes a funny twist with “We Won’t Drink This Piss” (down with bad corporate beer!) and “You Can’t Stop Me,” where Keithley delves into the character of Slapshot’s playing coach Reggie Dunlop, a natural alter ego perhaps!

Between albums from 1970-1972 they also hosted three weekly radio series on L.A. radio: The Firesign Theatre Radio Hour Hour, Dear Friends and Let’s Eat. Dear Friends spawned both a hit 1972 double-LP on Columbia Records—which all their fans memorized—and a twelve-LP syndicated series, with a dozen original broadcasts each spread over two LP sides—printed in a radio-only edition of 100 copies and bootlegged like hell ever since. Bizarre, freewheeling and hilarious, the original artifacts are today a $1000 investment on eBay that most fans have only ever experienced through nth-generation cassette dubs or cruddy internet bootlegs. Now Seeland Records and The Firesign Theatre are finally reissuing them all—and a whole lot more besides—in an insanely comprehensive release that will have Fireheads everywhere crying “Deputy Dan has no friends!” Duke of Madness Motors is a book / DVD package that takes a long-overdue trip through Firesign’s Dear Friends golden age of improv radio, when hanging out with the Firesign Theatre was as easy as extending an antenna. The DVD is a data disc with over 80 hours of MP3s covering every episode of every Firesign broadcast, 1970-1972, all completely restored and remastered, plus all the syndicated programs and some juicy bonus extras. Meanwhile the book contains a 108-page, full-color history of the era including an 8000-word essay,...

***After more than 20 years at the helm of the legendary punk rock act NO USE FOR A NAME, TONY SLY continues to illustrate his songwriting prowess with the release of his first full-length solo album, 12 Song Program. Abandoning the signature electric guitars and aggressive rhythms of NUFAN, Tony sets out armed with only his soothing and captivating melodies, guided by an acoustic guitar and a smattering of various other classic instruments. As a master of transcribing personal experiences and bemusements into transcendent verse, it follows that the lyrical content of 12 Song Program is nothing short of poetic as well. The songs range from folk to pop, with many genre defying moments in between, but are all sewn together seamlessly with the common thread of innovative and dexterous craftsmanship. To further develop the aural layers of the album, Tony utilizes the vocal capabilities of KARINA DENIKE (DANCE HALL CRASHERS) and JOEY CAPE (LAGWAGON) to complement his own. Fat Mike says it’s his favorite release of the past 10 years.

***In this album, legendary New York electronic music producer Hprizm (Antipop Consortium), also known as High Priest, reworks Gerald Cleaver’s acclaimed ’Signs’ (577 Records, 2020). Throughout, Hprizm expands the sonic boundaries of the original work through dream-like, transcendent electronic manipulations. Hprizm’s album is an innovative rework of Gerald Cleaver’s debut electronic project, building off of Cleaver’s long career as an accomplished Jazz percussionist. Born and raised in Detroit, Cleaver was influenced by both traditional jazz percussion and the Motor City’s electronic music scene. Both artists were inspired by forward-thinking electronic arrangement, and reinterpretation, first reimagining jazz and then reworking electronica, offering an inventive, complex and spacey album.

Appearing in the early ’80s as an offshoot of the legendary UK band Whitehouse, Sutcliffe Jugend was soon recognized as an equally confrontational and extreme purveyor of the early power electronics / industrial sound, producing on their early Come Organisation releases We Spit on Their Graves and Campaign some of the most abrasive and violent music ever. Since then, the group has pursued a unique sonic vision that combines transgressive subject matter—dark, cerebral musings on violence and sexual perversion—with brutal feedback and synthesizer damage. Recently, however, Sutcliffe Jugend has explored darker, more restrained (at least on a sonic level) sounds alongside their harsher work, and Blue Rabbit is the latest such offering, unfolding like a night-terror across the album’s eight tracks.  For fans who are primarily familiar with the group’s harsher output on Come Org and Cold Spring, Blue Rabbit is a revelation; a seething, quasi-ambient nightmare that lingers with the listener, its creep factor enhanced by the unsettling paintings from band member Kevin Tomkins that make up the album art. One won’t find their trademark power electronics here, nor the dark throbbing industrial of 2011’s With Extreme Prejudice; this is a darker, more unsettling experience, saturated with an atmosphere of doom and smoldering violence, as if Sutcliffe Jugend were channeling the creaking dread of Nurse With Wound’s Salt Marie Celeste through a series of blood-freezing psychosexual nightmares.

Back in 2008, legendary Australian punk group The Hard-Ons teamed up with “America’s Funnyman” Neil Hamburger on reluctant vocals to create an improbable punk rock artifact. Recorded in Sydney, and originally released in a small pressing on the German label Red Lounge Records, it immediately went out of print and has been highly sought after ever since. Alternative Tentacles is proud to reissue this classic, which includes covers of “Committed to Suicide” by Sick Things (pre-Fungus Brains / Dirty Three) and “Six Pack” by Black Flag, as well as two originals. The Hard-Ons have recorded over a dozen albums of high-quality punk rock since 1985. Neil Hamburger has done a number of comedy titles on the Drag City label, in addition to making numerous TV appearances. His most recent achievement was getting booed off the stage at the Reading Festival, in August 2010.

"Domestique is Ghost Shirt's full-length debut on the legendary Anyway Records (Guided by Voices, New Bomb Turks, Jenny Mae, The Ass Ponys, Gaunt). "I distinctly remember my first time hearing the band. It was late 2009, the song was 'History of the Radio,' and 30 seconds in, I went Kool-Aid Man onto the Ghost Shirt bandwagon. I immediately played 'Radio' again, just to make sure I had heard what I thought I heard. I've had this experience with three (now four) songs: The Beatles, 'Happiness Is a Warm Gun'; Flaming Lips, 'Five Stop Mother Superior Rain'; Teenage Fanclub, 'The Concept.' "Who has the balls, let alone talent, to join that triumvirate of awesome? Five songs into their career and they're already in the pantheon. Get in now, friends. The record contains New Pornographer sing-alongs mixed with She-and-Him-style boy / girl vocals. This band has all the ingredients for a Neutral Milk Hotel or Surfer Rosa-era Pixies-type breakout. Beyond that, who knows?" --The Audios Lounge, Austin, TX

Last Camel In Paris by Riley, Terry

Riley, Terry

Last Camel In Paris
Elision Fields

Throughout the 1970s, legendary American composer Terry Riley toured regularly in Europe, performing solo organ concerts. In October 1978, Riley's personal technician Chester Wood built a stereo digital delay out of an ancient computer he had procured from Don Buchla, and the subsequent tour was the maiden voyage to try it out. Riley's specially modified two-manual Yamaha YC-45D portable combo organ had a Just Intonation setting and allowed him to feed stereo signals to the digital delay. The Yamaha had been manufactured with single mono output, but now with the modification it had a separate output for each manual eventuating in four channels (two live and two delayed).  During a residency as a Fellow at DAAD in Berlin, Riley fine-tuned the delay speeds and experimented with different stereo combinations so that by the time of this Paris concert, the tape delays worked well with the tempos he was using. This all came on the heels of the Shri Camel recording Riley had just made in San Francisco for CBS. The musical materials of The Last Camel in Paris are second generational, belonging to the Shri Camel family while manifesting their own distinct shape and flavor.

***Psychedelic improvisational spiritual avant-rock/jazz featuring the legendary Larry Young on organ and equally astounding Joe Gallivan on drums, steel guitar, Moog synth, and percussion; the mysterious Nicholas wailing on guitar synthesizer and ring modulator; and Jimmy Molneiri on drums and percussion—recorded live at an anti-war rally in Washington D.C., in June 1972. They aimed the speakers at the Nixon White House, and blasted away as an anti-war protest! (The music so completely freaked out President Nixon that he demanded his chief of staff H.R. “Watergate" Haldeman to shut off the band’s source of electricity.) "After establishing himself as a leader on Blue Note in the 1960s, Young played on Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana’s Love Surrender Devotion, and the first three Tony Williams Lifetime albums. He emerged from those sessions at an exalted level of inspiration and with a formidable fire in his belly, and these traits helped shape Love Cry Want into a sui generis classic—a tone poem expressed with a flamethrower. Using a self-built guitar synthesizer, Nicholas stuns throughout the disc with brash flashes of Hendrix-ian extravagance. Gallivan displays both inventive exoticness and cyclonic power as he and Molneiri deftly guide the group through its furious paces.”—Dave Segal, Jazz Times

Dark Entries is humbled to continue digging through the archives of legendary producer Patrick Cowley. While best known for his production on chart-topping cybernetic disco anthems such as Sylvester’s “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” or his own “Menergy”, Cowley, who passed away from AIDS-related illness in 1982, left us with a substantial body of work. Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley’s friends and family to shed light on the lesser known facets of this singular artist’s output. This has resulted in a string of celebrated archival albums, including Catholic (featuring Jorge Socarras), School Daze, Muscle Up, Afternooners, and the recent Mechanical Fantasy Box. Some Funkettes, the latest addition to this series, is a collection of previously unreleased cover songs recorded from 1975-1977. These raw, unembellished tributes both showcase Cowley’s early musical interests and chart the development of his production techniques.  Some Funkettes opens with Cowley’s sauntering instrumental rendition of “Do It Anyway You Wanna”, the disco classic by People’s Choice. Next is a psychedelic reworking of the Temptations’ “Papa Was a Rolling Stone”, here hazily retitled “Papa Wuzza Rollinston”. Over its 7 minute runtime, the track’s metronomic, minimal groove builds to a frantic synth solo - this is pure Bay Area motorik. “Spiked Punch”, a curious riff on Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon” follows. Cowley’s lurching, minimalist reimagining of Hancock’s opus prefigures the work he would later do on Sylvester’s masterpiece “I Need Somebody to Love Tonight”. Side B opens with a truly important historical document: Cowley’s cover...

***BACK IN PRINT!!! The legendary 1973-74 ‘Teac Tapes’ from deep inside the DWIGHT TWILLEY BAND vault have been unleashed, never before available in any format, OiSTER was the primary name of the Dwight Twilley and PHIL SEYMOUR duo from the time they met in 1967 until the release of their Top 20 debut “hit” single for “I’m On Fire” in 1975. The two “halves” of the Oister formed a whole, and a tight friendship and performing partnership took flight, and with Dwight’s incredible songs in hand, the two were off an running. Recording at home with one of the first (commercially-available to the public) multi-track Teac home tape machines, the Oister DIY ethic was locked in early, and just exploded with an endless stream of ethereal pop magic, most of which has never been re-recorded by the Dwight Twilley Band, remaining frozen in time. The pair were cranking out an impressive amount of original material and pressing small batches of their own acetate LPs locally in Tulsa to sell to their friends at school, of which, this 2xLP collection rounds up 20 of their finest tracks, finally available to the public after over 40 years.  The early, primal years of the Twilley/Seymour Oister-era are sadly undocumented until now, with this 20-track collection, freshly remastered from the original tape for vinyl for the first time anywhere, now on HoZac Archival. Courts Or Wars by Second Layer

Second Layer

Courts Or Wars
1972

Adrian Borland and Graham Bailey might be better known as members of legendary post-punk group The Sound, but the two were childhood friends and had been playing together even earlier in The Outsiders, and continued their deep musical rapport as a duo, creating these intense and engaging songs as Second Layer at the same time as their higher profile band output. Combining their early recordings, including the 1979 Flesh As Property EP and 1980 State Of Emergency EP, Courts Or Wars takes its title from the first song that served as the pair’s introduction to listeners. Right from the beginning you are enveloped in what The Quietus described as, “a monochrome worldview morbidly obsessed with the dehumanizing effect of war, nuclear weapon annihilation, and the fracturing and negation of the self within an increasingly distorted and technologically mediated society.” Where The Sound fit snugly next to Echo And The Bunnymen, Second Layer had far more in common with the pulsing menace of Suicide. Borland’s familiar vocals and sense of melody hold a connection to his other songwriting, but within these songs he takes far more risks in his guitar work to suit the subject matter. What really drives everything is Bailey’s propulsive bedrock, formed by his homemade pre-drum machine rhythm generators, creating an innovative mechanical approach that somehow inserts a jittery neurotic touch that merges perfectly with his electronic layers driven by the wasp synth, various unique effects boxes or tape loops. Adding in Bailey’s own distinctive bass playing, the...

“Inspired, wholly unexpected collaboration between legendary singer songwriter Mark Lanegan and Ecstatic maverick Alessio Natalizia aka Not Waving - a timeless, modernist fusion of barrel-aged narratives and diverse, experimental backdrops, RIYL Scott Walker, Conny Plank & Moebius, David Sylvian...  Following Not Waving’s stellar recent recordings with Jim O’Rourke , Colin Potter & Jay Glass Dubs, ‘Downwelling’ finds him in a striking Pas de deux with alt. rock god Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, QOTSA). It’s one of those rare link-ups that truly transcends the sum of its parts, with Not Waving’s rolling range of nuanced electronics acting as backdrops for Lanegan’s smoky barritone storytelling. Delivered in a husky but pliable voice that has come to define the American alternative rock scene since the early ‘90s, Lanegan inhabits the songs with a reserved presence that has served him well for decades, but which has never been heard in quite this context. Pairing music recorded by Natalizia between London, Italy, and Paris over the past five years, with vocals recorded by Lanegan in LA, the duo arrive at dreamy non-place that’s not defined by geography or time. Instead the album offers a timeless insight into human behaviour, as reflected in the sleeve art details from the ‘Lights of Canopus’, a Persian version of the ancient Indian book of animal fables, the ‘Panchatantra.’ Thanks to Lanegan’s classically dusty tone - famously described as being “scratchy as a three day beard yet as supple as moccasin leather” - and the breadth of Not Waving’s...

***The latest from Secret Mission Records is a split release with the legendary Japanese label Mangrove. Continuing in the grand tradition of lo-fi garage punk from The Land of The Rising Sun is the brand new 7”, their second to date, from Mito, Japan’s DIALS. Even though the obvious and may be a bit lazy comparison to the great bands that came before them, such as the mighty Teengenerate and the fab Registrators is not out of place, it’s the tunes on this baby that make us flip with joy and make us look to the current and, perhaps, to the future!!! “Nervous” is a guitars-forward rocker, dressed in tight drumming and booming bass. And to assure that you won’t sit still they throw in hand claps a-plenty, which (in the perfect world) turns it in to something you can shake your money maker to.  Next up is “School Girl,” a great punk rock & roll number that’s a little faster and a little grimier. Super catchy! This record comes in a slick hand screened jacket with the download card included. Only 200 copies are available for the U.S.

Bert Jansch, legendary songwriter and guitarist, is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential musicians of all time. Since the mid-1960s, generation after generation has been held spellbound by his extraordinary, groundbreaking acoustic guitar playing and classic emotive songs. Jimmy Page, Neil Young, Nick Drake, Johnny Marr, Bernard Butler, Graham Coxon and Beth Orton have all been devotees, and newer generations, including Pete Doherty and Laura Marling, are still discovering Jansch for themselves. Spiritual Pajamas is honored to present this two-track 7-inch of previously released, but long out-of-print recordings. Mastered exclusively for vinyl by Paul Stubblebine, it includes liner notes edited from the transcript of an unpublished interview with Neil Young, as told to Sylvie Simmons. This one-time pressing is strictly limited to 1000 copies.  “At one point, I was absolutely obsessed with Bert Jansch. When I first heard that LP [1965], I couldn’t believe it. It was so far ahead of what everyone else was doing. No one in America could touch that.” —Jimmy Page  “He completely re-invented guitar playing and set a standard that is still unequaled today ... without Bert Jansch, rock music as it developed in the ’60s and ’70s would have been very different. You hear him in Nick Drake, Pete Townshend, Donovan, The Beatles, Jimmy Page and Neil Young. There are people playing guitar who don’t even realise they’ve been influenced by him one step removed.” —Johnny Marr

***Both bands were the brain child of LARRY HOLMES who ran the legendary Vinyl Solution record label and the Final Solution fanzine in New Orleans. Beginning in 1979, Vinyl Solution released singles by early punk bands Red Rockers, Shell Shock, Toxin III and other locals, along with the scene defining No Questions, No Answers compilation LP. The vinyl releases are U.S Punk classics, and his Final Solution fanzine was by far, the best documentation of the early New Orleans punk scene. Making sure to cover all angles, Larry put the MANIC DEPRESSIVES together. He choose pals like local loonie MANDEVILLE MIKE and members of the MODELS to fill the line up. The band didn't last too long, but they managed to leave behind a 7" EP and a two compilation cuts of tough, yet melodic speed punk. When the Manic Depressives ended, Larry formed the similar sounding 0:30 SECOND FLASH with another group of friends. They recorded a four song EP and played live a few times, but they were over even faster than the Manic Depressives. The EP was not released as planned, and Larry, like many others got bored with punk when it turned hardcore. We've collected the complete recordings of both bands on a 45rpm 12". Side one has the Manic Depressives 7” EP and compilation tracks from 1980-1981, while side two is the unreleased 0:30 Second Flash 7" EP from 1981. ***Ancestral Swamp is the 20th full-length album by legendary rambler, cartoonist, “outsider” folk singer, and guitarist Michael Hurley. It arrives just in the nick of time for the rabid Snockophile. A batch of new vittles and encores of some of his classic tunes, Ancestral Swamp bubbles with laid-back ease and tremolodic goodness.  Most songs have the simplest of arrangements: Hurley singing solo, accompanied by his guitar, Wurlizter organ, or fiddle. Tara Jane O’Neil helps lend a nice touch to “El Dorado,” and Snock calls upon frequent past accomplices Dave Reisch and Louie Longmeyer for their graceful touch on sleepy winners like “New River Blues” and “Gamblin’ Charlie.” As with all Hurley’s albums, once one sets the needle down, one is put in a certain peace and place. His voice and songs are unique, shuffling with characters and visions clear and wild. With Ancestral Swamp, it seems Snock has left his front door open a bit wider than usual. If you lean in close, you can inhale a little of the vapor rising off the water, and enjoy a tale or two.  Snock has personally test marketed The Ancestral Swamp” and the results are in: “The Ancestral Swamp is actually a good party record, even though fraught with dirges of dying and death.”

Goner

***"The tenth full length QUINTRON record and the first to be released on legendary Memphis label Goner Records. It's about fucking time. This album was recorded entirely live in a bizarre 2-track studio set deep in the heart of New Orleans’ now famous 9th Ward. The live tracks were then played back and sung over. Lets call this the ‘6th grade bedroom style’ of multi-tracking. For any interested equipment nerds, the Spellcaster Lodge studio consists of 4 microphones, one custom Neotek Series 1 board, and a 2 track tape deck. And a corkscrew. Quintron's musical partner MISS PUSSYCAT plays maracas and sings backup as well as entertaining all age groups with her highly amusing technicolor puppet shows. She has just recently finished filming a 10-episode puppet drama called Trixie And The Tree Trunks for VBS (Vice) TV.”

***The first duo album from Vancouver-based guitarist & oud player Gordon Grdina alongside legendary drummer Jim Black! This isn't the first meeting of course, as Grdina & Black have spent time together touring and recording with Grdina's Nomad Trio (also featuring Matt Mitchell), but Martian Kitties is a much looser and in some ways more exciting affair than their previously released recordings together. Grdina has made a name for himself as an inventive composer beyond just his incredible playing skills, but Martian Kitties finds both Grdina and Black having fun in a freely improvised setting! Comprised of 13 tracks that range from shorter vingettes to longer meditations, Grdina and Black let it fly—from the opening fire of "Martian Kitties" through lopping rhythms of "Short Scale" through the ending beauty in the hymn-like "Bear Handler." Grdina & Black stretch their skills about as far as they can. You can truly hear them having fun, like a throwback to a classic "blowing" session, allowing them to explore more possibilities—the gentle droning of "Black Lodge" (which I truly hope is a Twin Peaks reference since it sounds straight from the show), and the electronics laden "Fuzzy Goats." Martian Kitties might not be a landmark or [insert hyperbolic statement here] type album, but it sure is a helluva lot of fun and grows upon repeated listens. Grdina has continued to make his mark as a guitarist and Black here (now 3 decades into his career) makes us all wonder why he doesn't get more...

Nero’s Neptune

***Over the course of five decades, the legendary Austrian free jazz collective REFORM ART UNIT (and their offshoot groups) have collaborated with countless musicians, including Don Cherry, Carla Bley, Evan Parker, and Jim Pepper. Documented collaborations with free jazz notables include Impressions (Kovarik's Musikothek, 1978) with Anthony Braxton and Clifford Thornton; Subway Performances (Granit, 1994) and Illumination (InRespect, 1995) with Sunny Murray; and With Milo Fine (Granit, 1999). MILO FINE's lengthy resume includes numerous records as leader of his own group (the MILO FINE FREE JAZZ ENSEMBLE) as well as collaborations with Joe McPhee (MFG in Minnesota; Hat Hut, 1978, & Old Eyes; Hat Hut, 1979) and duo encounters with Derek Bailey (Scale Points on the Fever Curve; Emanem, 2003) and Anthony Braxton (Shadow Company; Emanem, 2004). In May of 2015, Fine fulfilled a personal ambition by hosting the first North American appearances of Reform Art Unit founding members FRITZ NOVOTNY and SEPP MITTERBAUER. Three nights of extraordinary and intimate concerts ensued at Minneapolis' Studio Toile d'Angles. This limited edition LP was culled by Nero's Neptune from over three hours of material, and consists of three pieces featuring two sextets and one nonet. Joining the core members of reformARTwest (Novotny: soprano sax/ flutes / percussion, Mitterbauer: trumpet / percussion, Fine: drum set . Bössendorfer Imperial piano / clarinets) are ELAINE EVANS, DANIEL FURUTA, BENJAMIN J MANSAVAGE KLEIN, DAVU SERU, CHARLES GILLETT and PAUL METZGER. ***Second solo album by Jeff Lescher, from the legendary Chicago group, Green. I was privileged to listen to test pressings of this album before it came out. My two comments at the time were: “you really lay it all out there on those songs”; and, “it reminds me of late Pye-era Kinks recordings”: melodic, catchy, heart-wrenching, with a little touch of the ramshackle which suits the emotional weight of the songs perfectly—very much more so than a slick sounding production would have (unthinkable). The originals (all but one track are originals) are all excellent, and pack plenty of punch. And the cover of Sandy Denny’s epochal masterwork, ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes,’ adds a bit of crunch and splash to a classic. A great album.

***The ultimate and final compendium of long lost and unreleased songs from San Francisco's legendary industrial/death metal/crust cult DEPRESSOR, remastered, re-packaged and elevated to the status of audio/visual shrine in honor of one of the heaviest and most elusive and visionary underground American punk/metal bands of our times. Hell Storms Over Earth is the final statement in what was Depressor's glorious late '90s/early '00s "crust era", when the band abandoned the polished and well-produced Godflesh-worshiping drum machine-based industrial metal sound of its early and mid '90s beginnings and opted to home-record everything thereafter on a four track recorder and steer their sound toward a more death metal/crust hybridized sound influenced by bands like Amebix, Celtic Frost, GISM, Voivod, Discharge and Napalm Death. This move pushed the band's sound over the edge into a void of despair and yielded a blown out low end dirty sound of utmost rawness and hatred. These are not only long lost or downright never before heard tracks from a legendary Bay Area cult band then at the forefront of change and renovation, but a priceless document of their times, a snapshot of an era long gone and forgotten, and a window opened into a time of turmoil and struggle which yielded some of the most dark, visionary and thought-provoking punk/metal hybridizations of our times.

World Of Rubber by Second Layer

Second Layer

World Of Rubber

Following the release of Courts Or Wars, combining their early material, 1972 is proud to reissue their only full length album, World Of Rubber. Fueled by experimentation in both song construction and recording techniques, the duo leave you enveloped in what The Quietus described as “a monochrome worldview morbidly obsessed with the dehumanizing effect of war, nuclear weapon annihilation, and the fracturing and negation of the self within an increasingly distorted and technologically mediated society.” Indeed, the goal had been to make each album a concept album, with this to be titled: Second Layer’s World Of Rubber. Alas, this was to be the first and last of those efforts. New detailed liner notes from Graham Bailey shed considerable light on the creation of this cold classic and its immediate aftermath. Bailey’s inventive construction and deconstruction of various electronics, effects boxes and tape loops form the propulsive base for these songs. Borland’s guitar playing is jagged and unleashed. Above it all is an undeniable sense of melody and Borland’s distinctive vocals. Soon, they would wonder where Second Layer ended and The Sound began, but World Of Rubber would stand as...

Siltbreeze is proud to announce the rerelease of the complete catalog from legendary Christchurch band (and Flying Nun alumnus) Scorched Earth Policy. Not that this should come as a surprise, as their membership was a veritable who’s who of the city’s finest musicians: Peter Stapleton (Vacuum, Pin Group, Terminals), Mary Heney (25 Cents, Shallows), Brian Crook (Max Block, Renderers, Terminals), Mick Elborado (Terminals, Shallows, Gas), Andrea Cocks (Missing Piece Productions) and Andrew Dawson (Dedicated Human).  During their existence, Scorched Earth Policy produced two 12-inch EPs for Flying Nun; their entire recorded output is presented here for the first time as one comprehensive LP, pressed in a limited edition of 500 copies.

Kleistwahr is the solo project of Gary Mundy, the legendary power electronic and noise-rock musician who is a founding member of Ramleh and runs the highly influential Broken Flag label. Solemn drones and elegiac long-form passages gird Kleistwahr’s Winter, which often chimes, glistens, and glows through a unhurried constructs for organ, synth, guitar, and electronics. Yet Mundy pivots throughout with triumphant explosions of shrill noise, redlined overload, and harrowingly anguished vocals from the great unknown. Quintessential Kleistwahr.  Winter was originally published as part of the instantly out of print On Corrosion - a 10 cassette anthology from 2019 that was housed in a handcrafted wooden box and featuring full albums from Kleistwahr, Neutral, Pinkcourtesyphone, Alice Kemp, She Spread Sorrow, G*Park, Relay For Death, Francisco Meirino, Fossil Aerosol Mining Project, and Himukalt. The collection also stood as the 50th release for The Helen Scarsdale Agency, an imprint founded in 2003 and dedicated to post-industrial research, recombinant noise, surrealist demolition, existential vacancy and then some.  With the necessary reissue of Winter, The Helen Scarsdale Agency will embark upon the reissue of much of that material from On Corrosion.

This Is Not A Dream by Dadamah

Dadamah

This Is Not A Dream
Grapefruit

This Is Not a Dream is a double album collection of every song released by the legendary Dunedin, New Zealand quartet Dadamah, including the This Is Not A Dream LP, and their three 7-inch singles and one unique compilation track. Grapefruit’s release is a thirteen song collection with the full album on one LP and all the 7-inch and compilation tracks on the other. Inspired by the Kranky label’s CD compilation of Dadamah’s existing catalog in 1994, this vinyl version includes two additional songs from a posthumously released 7-inch and it’s been sequenced and designed by the band. Before Dadamah, Peter Stapleton played in The Terminals, Vacuum and The Victor Dimisich Band as well as The Pin Group with guitarist Roy Montgomery. Singer Kim Pieters and organ / synth player Janine Stagg had never been in a band before Dadamah. Dadamah only played live three times, devoting their efforts to four-track recording. Nevertheless, word managed to get out about the band and they were asked to contribute to the 1991 Drag City single “I Hear the Devil Calling Me” which featured twelve songs hovering around one minute each by a who’s who of the then current New Zealand underground music scene. They released their only album in 1992. Jay Hinman (currently of Dynamite Hemorrhage) noted Dadamah’s solitary place in the NZ underground in his Superdope fanzine: “Dead C. might blare and scrape, the Terminals might twist and wind, but Dadamah positively shimmer with beautifully earthy lo-fi Velvets / Ubu sound.”

Big Cheap Motel by Axemen

Axemen

Big Cheap Motel
Siltbreeze

Siltbreeze joins Sleek Bott Industries for a series of vinyl-only releases from New Zealand's legendary Axemen. (Little) Stevie McCabe, Bob Brannigan and Stu Kawowski have recorded decade's worth of priceless tuneage, some of which, it only seems fair, should finally see the light on a format suited to their chutzpah.  The first one out of the gate is the trio's 1983 Big Cheap Motel, their difficult third album, their protest album (following the blistering, insane, and completely live debut Equinox and the studio / live tribute to punk-dub-beer-noise-cubism, Mick's Dancefloor (Mix)). Rarely heard outside the Southern Hemisphere, this montage of rough-and-ready live performances and Peterboro Studio recordings teeters on the precipice of chaotic genius alongside such stalwarts as Alternative TV / Hear & Now's What You See Is What You Are and 1/2 Japanese's Loud.  Says McCabe, "Bob and myself went down to check out the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, the scene of the summertime concert-in-the-park series of free outdoor events sponsored by the local council and Big M milk drinks, only to find the park plastered with billboard-sized posters of scantily clad young ladies advertising the sponsor's wares. We immediately scrapped our set list--which extolled the joy of festivals and praised the council and Big M milk drinks as worthy town governors and milk-based food products, respectively--and replaced them with a set of 'protest' songs about the travesty, which were performed at the event, to the mild annoyance of the council and the sponsors. Following this brutal coming...

Ingens Slav by Slam

Slam

Ingens Slav
Puke N Vomit

***PNV Records is reissuing for the first time ever the debut full length album Ingens Slav by legendary Swedish skaterock / punk band SLAM. Slam was an influential and pioneering Swedish skatepunk band from Gävle, formed in 1982 by 5 skaters. They started out named DESTROY with their first gig happening within weeks of forming, after a name change and about a year later their first recording was released as a tape in January 1983. They were active playing most local and national gigs. Their records were on their own label and sold by independent distributors all over. Their first full length album came in 1984 called Ingens Slav. In 1985 they appeared on and had the title track for the American skate magazine Thrasher's Skaterock Vol.3 compilation "Wild Riders of Boards" curated by famed underground artist Pushead. In 1987 they had an album released by US company Subcore Records The End of Laughter and did a two-month US tour, which resulted in 27 shows at various venues which made them play together with such acts as Circle Jerks, Gang Green, JFA, SNFU, Instigators, Saint Vitus and many more.

Vengeance From Darkness by Death Yell

Death Yell

Vengeance From Darkness
Nuclear War Now

***In the 1980s, South America produced some of the most legendary extreme metal in the genre’s history. While the renowned Brazilian scene undoubtedly cast a long shadow, like minded maniacs in regions like Colombia and Chile were simultaneously creating their own brand of black/death metal. Among the pioneers of the Chilean scene, DEATH YELL stands out as a founding group, and NWN! Productions is proud to present an official reissue of their legendary 1989 demo Vengeance From Darkness. Formed in 1988 in Santiago (after a stint under the name Pestilence), Death Yell played thrashing death metal with a manic intensity with clear influences from Brazilian maniacs such as Sarcofago, Sextrash and Mutilator, with a punk energy that brings to mind Extreme Noise Terro and the UK grind scene. Instrumentally proficient and sonically violent, Death Yell creates a controlled chaos that marries its deathrash roots with a macabre, funerary atmosphere replete with sinister, lurching organ work. Vengeance From Darkness was self-financed and self-released as a cassette by the band, gaining a legendary status in tape trading circles at the time. The prestige of this demo led to some of its tracks being reused on a split 7” with Beherit via Turbo Music in 1991, and another 7” titled Morbid Rites on Seraphic Decay Records in 1992. The band would remain dormant until their reactivation in 2012.

At the time I just wasn't paying attention to the writing and production. I was focused on trying to keep the balance between our love of exploration and our focus on creating what I would call weirdo pop. In hind sight I see where I greatly underestimated our advance way of making music. What ended up on the 3 releases of that era was only the tip of the iceberg. Hopefully with this release a glimpse into the inner workings of that era can be evaluated. Basically V3 can be divided into two parts: with Roxanne and without Roxanne. After RUDY and I left the band Jim chose to slowly move away from V3 and focus more on his solo work. While LELAND CAIN and SAM BROWN brilliantly held up the flag of the old material, the creative experimentation was gone. Once Jimbo acquiesced to the need for sales he was faced with a choice. He had to either become an artistic renegade, or become the major label organ grinder's monkey tipping its hat for spare coin. "Holy moly, if it isn’t a reissue of the super legendary Four Stars comp! This terrific artifact documenting Wellington New Zealand’s postpunk scene was originally released in 1980 (in an edition of 250) & copies have been as rare as a chook’s tooth ever since. Four ultra obscure bands-Life In The Fridge Exists, Wallsockets, Naked Spots Dance & Beat Rhythm Fashion-comprise these two sides & offer a fantastic snapshot of a radical DIY scene that played out in a vacuum at the bottom of the world. A great bookend to the excellent AK79 comp released at roughly the same time, this is a one-time reissue edition of 250 & a must-own for any fevered collector of New Zealand’s enigmatic, pre Flying Nun underground. Leave no stone unturned!"—Zander Van Dijk, Swineken Recordings

***Lacrau is the first U.S. release of music featuring the legendary Portuguese guitarist’s guitarist MANUEL MOTA. Mota’s mysterious, uncompromising, resolutely personal approach to the instrument has most often been captured on solo recordings—and typically of an immersive length, such as Rck, a 5-CD release from 2013. Lacrau captures the ambience of a warm Sunday afternoon in late fall in Lisbon when longtime friends Mota and DAVID GRUBBS sat down for this waking dream of a first duo performance. The session unfolds with a real-time, documentary feel in which athematic, non-repeating musical gestures are rendered with an extreme sensitivity to microscopic soundworlds brought about by fingertips, strings, and tube amplifiers. These explorations are as apt to find emotional weight in the solitary note in all its fret-buzzing glory as they are in unexpected turns of phrase briefly referencing blues and jazz.

***540 Records and Painkiller have teamed up once again to bring you the other half of the legendary “Breakdown; Both Demos” series: the legendary ’87 Demo. BREAKDOWN's original 1987 lineup was only together for a few short months, but in that time they produced one of the most legendary and influential recordings in the history of New York Hardcore. Paving the way for every hard and heavy band to follow, Breakdown’s take on hardcore was balanced with the perfect mix of hip hop’s bounce, the power and dynamics of heavy metal, and an unmistakable New York accent laced across a tough, streetwise sound that could only have come out of 1980’s New York City. This LP contains the full 9-song ’87 Demo, released here for the first time on vinyl in its entirety, backed with a crushing live set recorded on WNYU radio’s Crucial Chaos during the summer of 1987. Both recordings have been faithfully restored from original sources and sound better than ever. Includes a full color 12”x24” poster insert with extensive notes and anecdotes from members of the NYHC scene.

Hard Rain Falling by DOA

DOA

Hard Rain Falling
Sudden Death

DOA is back with a vengeance! It looked like Canada’s legendary punk pioneers were going to hang it up, as Joe “Shithead” Keithley, the godfather of hardcore, sought political office in Canada, but that didn’t happen this time. So look at it this way, the political world’s loss is the music world’s gain, because DOA has a brand new full-length, Hard Rain Falling, which Sudden Death Records is very pleased to release. It’s DOA’s sixteenth studio album. When Keithley set out to write the songs for the album, he used DOA’s early efforts like Hardcore 81, Something Better Change and War on 45 as a bit of template, in the sense that the songs should be short, fast and right to the point. The end result is great, likely their best album since War on 45. Keithley’s lyrics take on a wide range of modern and horrible screwups, from racism to street gangs to war to environmental degradation. With all of that in mind, Shithead and his infamous henchmen Paddy Duddy (drums) and Mike Maggot (bass) went into the studio with fire in their bellies and with the goal of making a kick-ass album. It worked—Hard Rain Falling is a great effort from one of the world’s most influential and inspirational bands.

Three Lefts Make A Right by Pointed Sticks

Pointed Sticks

Three Lefts Make A Right
Northern Electric

Sudden Death records is pleased and proud to announce the agreement of a new distribution deal with legendary Vancouver band the Pointed Sticks. This deal will see the band being welcomed back into the Sudden Death family. SDR takes over distribution of the bands last full length LP, 2009’s criminally underheard and overlooked LP, Three Lefts Make A Right. Released on the Northern Electric imprint, self produced, and mixed at the Warehouse by Mike Fraser (AC/DC etc) , the album features 13 original songs that succeed both in capturing the fun of the bands heyday, yet also pointing towards a more reflective style of writing befitting the band’s extraordinary life experience.  Pointed Sticks were formed in 1978, in the first wave of the emerging Vancouver punk rock scene. Along with their contemporaries, such as D.O.A., The Dishrags, Subhumans, Modernettes, and others, the PS were an integral part of a local music explosion that has long been commented on and admired by critics world wide. Fighting against the resistance of what was an overwhelmingly reactionary Canadian music scene at the time, the PS relied on the formula of independent releases, extensive touring, and the underground grapevine, to eventually make their way to a recording deal with UK pioneers Stiff Records, the only Canadian band to do so. The Pointed Sticks broke up in 1981, and the legacy of the original band is preserved on Perfect Youth, their only full length LP, and Waiting For The Real Thing, a red hot...

BACK IN PRINT!!! A pairing of two legendary bands celebrating their joint twenty year history within the Punk/Hardcore genre. Both songs were recorded at KURT BALLOU’s God City Studios in early 2011, and mastered by JOHN GOLDEN (Neurosis, Melvins, etc). “Runaway” from CONVERGE is an instant classic for the band, unrelenting in its speed and emotional ferocity from beginning to end. While DROPDEAD’s “Paths of Glory” is an unforgettable political punk/hardcore anthem, that proves that the years behind the band have only strengthened their hold on the battlefront of the true underground.

Voice From The Lake by Jansen, Shuyler

Voice From The Lake

***“I'll be the first to admit I never made the effort to check out Edmonton's legendary OLD RELIABLE when they were around. They were rumoured to be Canada's best roots/alt-country whatever band, but by the early 2000's I wasn't sure we needed anymore indie twang, regardless of how good it was. It's funny how things work as I now go backwards with the music of Old Reliable's co-leader SHUYLER JANSEN. A demo of a few songs Shuyler was working on with John Collins and Dave Carswell crossed my path sometime in 2009, and I was stunned with what I heard. These were fully realized downcast yet hooky songs of rich psychedelic thick swirling epic proportions. And that voice! Who was this Shuyler Jansen? A guy from an Americana band? Well he's come a long way. And just what the heck kind of music is it? Hayseed spacerock? I'm really not sure if these are rock, or pop, or country, or electronic songs. They have conventional stringed and keyed and plucked and bowed instruments yet the overall sound is expansive in a floating, comforting (yet unfamiliar) way. The songs of course on that demo were flushed out and finished and became this otherworldly gem of a new album. It is incredibly catchy in a warm and weird way. I continue to listen to it and hear new things, and I've heard it dozens of times now. And how to do I bring it back to Old Reliable? Well, I have went...

***A reissue of the classic recording of tape manipulation and beautiful noise featuring the legendary FRED FRITH and CHARLES K. NOYES. Best known for his work with computers, here is a young Ostertag playing an instrument consisting of a highly unstable and peculiar recording system, which uses helium balloons to hold up tape loops between three tape recorders made to malfunction in a variety of ways. The record marks one of the first, and to this day one of the only, times that tape manipulation techniques developed by the first generation of electronic composers for use in the studio were adapted for live performance and improvisation. Ostertag uses this rather sculptural and bizarre contraption to manipulate the brilliant guitar playing of Fred Frith, and the elusive percussion work of Charles K. Noyes.

Leave The Sad Things Behind by Frazer, Paula

Frazer, Paula

Leave The Sad Things Behind
Birdman

Leave The Sad Things Behind is Paula Frazer’s third solo and second studio record since ending her legendary band Tarnation. Frazer’s angelic vocals and masterful songwriting are framed by an all-star band — Scott Hirsch, James Kim and Tom Heyman (Court And Spark); Oranger keyboardist Patrick Main; former Kronos Quartet cellist Joan Jeanrenaud; and other San Francisco luminaries including members of Mother Hips and American Music Club. Old-tyme sounds, symphonic wonderment, and dark layers are all exposed on Leave The Sad Things Behind. And there is still a definite Ennio Morricone influence, as well as nods to Scott Walker.  Frazer sang in her preacher father’s choir as a young girl in Arkansas. She moved out to San Francisco where she played in many bands, the most famous being Tarnation which was signed by 4AD. She has played with the likes of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and The Tindersticks, both of whom share a penchant for rich soundtracks framing classic songs of warmth and sadness.
